Thanks for the info, chonies! Yeah, there seems to be a dearth of information about 90s alternative, espeically when compared to hip hop, which has been more widely studied. I'm running into the same problem with new wave compared to punk. Nothing can be easy! Thanks again, I'll have a look at those.

Starskin, there is a book called Milk It! by Jim DeRogatis which is a collection of essays about the alternative music of the 90s. Apparently, you can get it used at Amazon for one cent.

I'm getting retroactively hooked on Luscious Jackson. Holy crap could they jam. Why didn't I listen to them back in the day? Oh yeah, because I lived in the land of the Philistines and "Naked Eye" was the only song that got radio play.
Some of my favorites back in the day: Concrete Blonde (I totally wanted to sing like Johnette Napolatano)
Shakespeare's Sister (Yeah, I was a wannabe goth. A poser, I tell ya)
Metallica's Black Album (I won't front and say I was an OG metalhead. I wasn't that bad a poser)
Redd Kross (during my pseudo-hippie phase)
Reverend Horton Heat (I still love rockabilly to this day)
Sugarcubes

I saw Redd Kross when I was at college in New Orleans in 1993, and they put on a great show. I still listen to Phaseshifter on a regular basis. Ah, good times!
I was actually trying to find some Rev. Horton Heat recently to replace some of my old/disappared cassettes. Must look harder!
ETA: Chonies mention of Jello Biafra took me further back down memory lane. I got to see him speak on campus around '91 and loved every moment of the 4+ hours. In fact, he went on for so long that my roommates got worried and came looking for me!

I loved Lucious Jackson! If I recall correctly they were signed to the Beastie Boys' label. Or maybe Adam Horowitz had his own label. Either way it went bankrupt. I don't know what happened to them after that.

To second chonies, i have been all about reading whatever I can about Mia Zapata and the Gits. They have a website and there is a ton of info about a documentary that will be released this spring. I have learned, or in some cases, remembered so much! Wikipedia is always questionable, but may have some decent links. Have fun, starskin! I have had such nostalgia for the 90s lately, and have been looking up random stuff for the past week. I am having a blast rediscovering bands that I didn't pay enough attention to at the time, because I was too obsessed with Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder. Ah, how I miss the 90s. I gues I just peaked them and really have not embraced much music since then, except for a few bands. If that makes me a fogey, so be it!

Ah, Jello Biafra. ;D I loved the Dead Kennedys. I'll have to give one of their albums a listen sometime. There was this obscure Canadian group called Kon Kan. They had a one-hit wonder titled "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." Anyone else remember them? It took me forever to find them. Thank goodness for the internets. P.S. I have both Shakespear's Sister albums. I still enjoy listening to them. It's a guilty pleasure, I tell ya!
