There is a thread for 80s music, so I figured we needed a thread to discuss the music I know best. The 90s.
I was making a 90s memory lane CD, and to me, the music was so distinctive.
There were quite a few one hit wonders in the 90, but also some people that were around for quite a while. It may be sad, but if there is a song or artist that can transport me back immediately to the 90s, I'd have to say it's the Spice Girls. They were so purely 90s!
Particular songs that can just set me back a decade include, but aren't limited to:
Sunny Came Home - Shawn Colvin Bitch - Meridith Brooks The Freshmen - The Verve Pipe Roll to Me - Del Amitri Two Princes - The Spin Doctors It's All For You - Sister Hazel
And that's just a few...
What are your favorite songs from the 90s? Overrated/underrated songs/artists? Best one hit wonders? Worst one hit wonders? Songs you are embarassed you ever liked? Let's all take a trip back to the decade that brought us Nirvana and Britney Spears and reflect...
ETA: I took the thumbs up off the message icon because I realized NO OTHER THREADS had that and I felt stupid. Again.

I think that a lot of people seem to forget about the early '90s (and late '80s) new jack/jill swing, and all of the great high school dance-y tunes. This music got shadowed by grunge...I was in high school 90-94. Some great early 90s songs:
I Can't Wait Another Minute--Hi-Five Do Anything--Natural Selection If I Had No Loot--Tony Toni Tone Weak--SWV Round and Round--Tevin Campbell I Love Your Smile--Shanice
Etc......

mrpancake, your list of songs is my Rick Dees and the Weekly Top 40 mix tape!!!
But I would also like to contribute:
The Sign - Ace of Base (Oh heck, ANYTHING Ace of Base) Right Kind of Love - Jeremy Jordan I'll Make Love to You - Boyz II Men Shoop - Salt 'n Pepa Push It (that Lalala long song) The Entire Romeo + Juliet Soundtrack (Lovefool etc) All for Love - Bryan Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart Alright - East 17
There's hundreds more I could think of if I weren't having one of those tired alcohol-fuel headaches.

Duuuude! I found my thread! I grew up in the 90's, so I am particularly fond of some awesomely bad songs from this era such as: -"How Bizarre" by ? -"Are You Jimmy Ray?" by ? -"Barely Breathing" -"The Way" by Fastball
And of course, the requisite roller rink song that got everyone on the floor..... "Fantasy" by Mariah Carey. I'll think of more later.

I actually dug out my Hanson CD from years ago and listened to it today.
And I LOVED the Spice Girls. I know they weren't good singers, but I loved their songs.
In elementary school, we'd have "Tape Day" in music class every so often where everyone could bring a tape or CD and the teacher would play one song of our choice off of it. Those days were fun. I remember in 4th grade, like, 4 or 5 people brought "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio on the same day and the kids got in an argument over whose CD would get to play it, since the teacher was only going to play it once.

I can't believe someone started this thread! I grew up in the 90's, so I've recently been trying to remember some 90's bands to listen to for nostalgic purposes.
I've not had much luck remembering most of them, but I did buy a greatest hits CD of The Gin Blossoms awhile back, and I was surprised at how good it was and how much I remembered. And of course, I'll always love "The Sign" by Ace of Base. All of The Verve's album Urban Hymns is good too, IMO. Oh, and I love a lot of stuff by The Cranberries. I'm partial to some hits by Sinead O'Connor as well. A few days ago, I heard Toad the Wet Sprocket on a radio station.

A couple more to add to the list:
Tevin Campbell - 'Can We Talk' and 'Come Back to the World' SWV - 'I'm So Into You'
It's new jack swing and grunge that are my main music memories from the 90's.
Know what else I miss from the 90's? Salt n Pepa videos. What happened to the days when female artists had naked males parading around in their videos instead of parading around naked themselves? Jessica, Britney, Lindsay, etc....watch and learn.
I did my recruit training for the Army in 1996, and we were allowed to have a radio on at night that played one station, and it was the same few songs played over and over:
Tracy Bonham - 'Mother Mother' No Doubt - 'Just A Girl' Everclear - 'Santa Monica' Rage Against the Machine - 'Bulls on Parade' OMC - 'How Bizarre'
Basically the Top 40 from those few months, repeated ad nauseam.

Must have some Urge Overkill. Anything from Saturation, like "Sister Havana", "Positive Bleeding" or "Bottle Of Fur" - or, of course, their cover of "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon". Gawd, I miss them so much. And you must have some Garbage - look at my sexy AV!
