Oooh, I *love* "Sheep May Safely Graze", babyfishmouth! That would be nice for a good traditonal wedding. And yes, ask any classical musician one piece of music they never want to hear at a wedding, and they'll tell you the Cannon in D. Have a little creativity, people!
My aunt Hilary had one of the best uses of music for a wedding. When she and my uncle James made their entrance at the reception, the band started playing the theme to "The Simpsons". Awesome.

I always think of the old commercials about "My name is ___. And I'm an alcoholic" when I hear it.
Genius!

If I had coordinated it a little better, i.e., at all, I would have had the Three Stooges music at my wedding OR the Benny Hill music.

For whatever reason, among the music at my brother and sister-in-law's wedding reception, the band played the theme from "Gilligan's Island"! I was standing there with two his frat brothers, and one of them looked at the other and said, "Is that....?" The other one, on cue, goes, "Yes!" and proceeds to sing the entire theme song along with the band!

When my mom remarried the first dance was Daniel Lanois's 'Falling at Your Feet.' I wound up choosing it because my mother was hellbent on Stan Roger's 45 Years but my stepfather hated it. When my parents got married their first dance was to Neil Young's 'Helpless.' Which... okay. It kind of makes sense, my mother is from northern Ontario and my dad is from the Slocan Valley. So they... like nature. I know my dad tends to always take over my posts in these threads, but the last time we mentioned wedding songs he declared that he wanted k-os's 'Crabbuckit' because "everyone will be so jealous of the crab I've got in my bucket." I just hope he never says that to a woman that he wants to marry.

I'll listen to just about anything in a wedding, but please, please, please could people stop with the Pachabel's Cannon in D? Can we add in Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring? 'Cause if it's not one, then it's the other.

Hmm. Weirdly enough I only ever hear "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" at Christmas time, and since that only comes once a year, I still like the song. But yeah, I agree that there should be a lot more creativity in the songs people use in weddings. The Cannon in D and Jesu are both very lovely pieces of music---but not the ONLY lovely pieces of music!

Sorry to double post, but I just realized that, if I ever were to get married, I want to walk down the aisle to the theme from MST3K. You know the grandiose, slow version at the end? Perfect! Why didn't I think of it before? Or I suppose I could have it played as I enter the reception. But still...it's practically tailor made for aisle walking.
Huh. Too bad I never plan on marrying, eh?

Is it ridiculous that I want to do a first dance (were I planning on having one) to "If I Had a Million Dollars"? I think it would be fun.

It's not weird. I want my first dance to be to "I Melt With You." Hopefully I will meet a very understanding, new-wave-lovin' kind of guy...
