Sirius 22 - First Wave bill themselves as New Wave and Classic Alternative. They have a Darkwave show Sunday nights and they stick to the 80s goth/new wave thing.

Bumping this up because I can't stand to see my beloved New Wave thread languishing. Ok, so it's Kafka's thread, but I love it! I haven't had a chance to think about any more NW issues because my brain's been so fried with work and loan rigmarole.
But I'm listening to Echo and the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" and I looooove it. I don't know whether to label them NW or post-punk (my other music-nerd friend and I got in an actual *screaming* match about this once), but I don't care. I love this song.
Here's a question for everyone: You know how in bands there's always one "hot one" that everyone pays attention to, usually the lead singer or guitarist (like Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, Simon LeBon of Duran Duran or even Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zepplin)? Who do you think is an overlooked NW heartthrob? For me it's all about Alan Wilder, the former arranger and mult-instrumentalist of Depeche Mode. He definitely was lower profile, but he is a musical GENIUS, IMO, and extremely hot, to boot. He's also completely insane, if we're judging by his solo work with Recoil. But mmmm...it's the kind of crazy I like!
You?

Alan Wilder is cute, for sure. Bernard Sumner (New Order) used to have a sort of je ne sais quoi for me but not so much anymore. The bassist from the Smiths--Andy Rourke? I once told a friend, after staring at my Queen is Dead poster for awhile, that he was cute, and she told me I really needed a boyfriend. Hmm.

About three years ago I went to see Echo and the Bunnymen and Psychedelic Furs. I wasn't expecting much. It was an awesome show. The Bunnymen played first and Ian McCulloch still had his ever present cigarette with the ash burning to a ridiculous length. The Furs were wonderful. Richard Butler still sounded great and was so happy to be there. He was so generous and fed off the energy of the crowd.

Did they happen to play "Am I Wrong" by Love Spit Love? I might like that song more than anything by the P-Furs, and that's saying something.

Did Love Spit Love do "Lay the Blame on Love"? Because they used to play that song at 80s night, but I couldn't remember for the life of me who did it. Don't worry, carrier76, for a while I had a crush on every guy in The Smiths, and it was then I knew I had to get out of the house a little more. ETA: Fun New Wave fact! Ricky Gervais of The Office used to be in a NW band called Seona Dancing. I've never heard their music, but check out the wicked 80s hair in this photo!

Love Spit Love definitely did "Am I Wrong" (a.k.a "Lay the Blame on Love") in the 90s. I also remember it showing up a little later on the Angus soundtrack, it was played during the opening credits and the school marching band played along with it...kinda cool.

Is *that* what it's called? Hooray, I've finally figured out why I'm never able to find it! Thanks, TacoFlavored! One of the problems with a lot of the songs they play at nightclubs is that you never find out who performs them, since they almost never announce the artists.

Damn! I just found out from Keith Olbermann on Countdown that VH1 Classic has been running a marathon of the MTV's first-day videos since midnight last night to celebrate MTV's 25th Anniversary. Anyway, might be a good time to try to catch some old new wave videos! (Unfortunately, I only caught a Nazareth song and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"--which was NOT a first-day video, but back then I think they rotated the same 14 videos all day long, so I guess there will be some filler.) Oh...Buggles are on now.
