I watched a good portion of the VH1 Classic re-airing yesterday, but had to give up after the 50th REO Speedwagon video. On a positive note, I got to see a bunch of Split Enz videos and even two Ultravox videos, which caused me to pull out my copy of Vienna. (Well, my download, since I had the album on tape originally, and the tape died a few years ago.)

I saw the launch too! I sat through the 10+ minutes of space shuttle B.S. just to see the rocket launch and the moon man, "Ladies and Gentlemen, rock and roll," and the "da, da da, da da da da, da da da da!" It gave me chills, yo. Then I thought about the current state of MTV, and how promising and revolutionary the channel was in the beginning, and it made me really sad.
Ahem, anyway.
I saw the video for "Keep On Loving You" by REO and thought I would wretch. Kevin Cronin makes me sick. I did catch the vid for Split Enz's "History Never Repeats" (is that what it's called?). I love Neil Finn. Which other one was played?
Too much Rod Stewart....ugh!

Along with "History Never Repeats", they did "One Step Ahead" and "I Hope I Never". Lovely stuff! I get a kick out of the fact that 25 years later, I'm still enjoying bands from NZ (my current music obsession). The sad part is that it's still just as hard to come by when you live in the States. Has anyone mentioned The Bolshoi yet? They were one of my favorite bands in the '80s. "Friends" and "Lindsay's Party" are still two albums that never get old for me.

I watched a good portion of the VH1 Classic re-airing yesterday, but had to give up after the 50th REO Speedwagon video. Oh, lord. I remember back in early '82 when I got MTV and it was wall-to-wall REO/Styx/.38 Special videos. And by videos, I mean the same ones, over and over interspersed with the new wave stuff. They played a couple of Robert Palmer videos last night when I watched that I hadn't seen for decades–"Clues" and "Johnny and Mary." I always thought "Johnny and Mary" had a new wave-y vibe to it and damn, it's a great song—but the video had MIMES in it. And jumpsuits for me were apparently very big back then. Gee. The things one's mind wipes clean when it needs to. For real. It was too much last night and too much back in the early 80s. But I'll give him props—he had a kickin' new wave hair do, even though he wasn't anything close to being considered an artist from that genre. Yes! It was MTV who turned me on to Split Enz, although I have to admit that they kind of creeped me out in the "One Step Ahead" video.

I saw Gary Numan at Irving Plaza in NYC last night. AMAZING show. I was with my young and boyfriend, both new Gary fans. My niece is into industrial music. It was her first show ever, as she is only 16. What an incredible show last night in New York. After the show, she said "He's way better than anyone I listen too".It was wonderful to see all the new fans in the audience, and he looked like he was having a good time.
II would have stayed to finally meet Gary after being a HUGE die hard fan all these years, but couldn't as I had to catch a train home to NJ. Hopefully someday...
Gary is one of the few people around who is putting new music out that is just as good, if not at times better than the old.

Why is Morrissey being so difficult? I thought he and Marr had a good working relationship - I believe it was The Smith's drummer who pissed him off by demanding (and winning) more money. Is his solo career that great that he can turn a reunion offer down? I admit to being partial to Everyday is Like Sunday.
Topic: New Wave. I really love I Ran by A Flock of Seagulls and I Melt With You by Modern English. Whatever happened to them?

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy this thread has shown back up. It's the best.
I like "Space Age Love Song" more than "I Ran."

I may end up mining this thread for the bulk of my Masters thesis. I'll be sure to credit the Fabulous Greecies, of course! I just wrote a whole chapter, actually, about why new wave is as awesome as everyone says punk is. Yay synths!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy this thread has shown back up. It's the best. I like "Space Age Love Song" more than "I Ran." I like "Wishing (I Had a Photograph of You)" more than both of them. But I love Flock dearly! There's a digital music channel on my cable system that only plays new wave music from the 80s. It's my musical lifeline since I can't get my favorite new wave internet radio station anymore. Oh, how I long for a Moog synthesizer resurgence in pop music!
