My People!!! I have found you!!!
I still to this day, mourn why for a few brilliant years, this music was aloud to be part of pop culture, and then kicked aside to bring on the crap.
I blame Paula Abdul for this.

You know, I love the song 'Electric Barbarella', but I just saw the video on YouTube and it's so incredibly sexist that it makes me want to punch something. Grr. I think it's actually diminished some of my affection for the song. Yeah, yeah, it's supposed to be ironic, I get it...except...not. I know Duran Duran have a reputation for making provocative videos that can be seen to objectify women ('Girls on Film', etc), but this one just left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe I'm missing something.
On a more positive note...I looooooooooove Depeche Mode. I've been listening to 'Everything Counts' and 'Shake the Disease' non-stop today.
ETA: What do you all think of Elvis Costello? Or would you not include him under the umbrella of new wave? I can't decide if he's more punk or new wave, but I'm starting to get really into his music.

Starskin, I love Elvis Costello's early work (with The Attractions). In fact, his song Beyond Belief is tied at number one for my favorite song of all time. I just really and truly love this song. The funny thing is that I'd heard it numerous times and never thought anything about it, until one night it just clicked for me and now it gives me happy chills every time I hear it. It's one of the few songs I can stand to listen to on constant repeat. It's best listened to through earphones so you can get his voice deep into your head.

I'll have to listen to that one. I think one of the reasons I'm a little wary of Costello is because I've read interviews with him (particularly the one following the incident were he screamed a bunch of racist remarks at another band) and he comes across as kind of a dick. Which is a shame, because I love 'Every Day I Write the Book' and 'Radio, Radio'.
ETA: You Flock of Seagulls fans, where should I start with them? I know 'Wishing', 'Space Age Love Song' (brilliant!) and 'I Ran', but what do you consider recommended listening?

Of the few times I've had a run-in with them, they have been pleasant. Maybe when it comes to music, it's a different story. I do think some of his music fits into this catagory. "Accidents Will Happen" is an all-time favorite song of mine. "Shake the Disease" = Brillience!!! I don't own anything by Flock of Seagulls. I should, this just reminds me to go out and get it. I wish I could help you out. Talk Talk recently had a few of their CDs re-released. I know a lot of people think of "It's My Life", but their self-titled song "Talk Talk", in my opinion is better.

To be fair, all of the interviews and articles I've read about him are from the early to mid 80s. He could be a lot different now, or perhaps was un-savvy about media relations then. He sort of straddles the line between punk and new wave for me, kind of like Blondie.
I read a really interesting article about Talk Talk and how they composed some of their later albums, which are supposed to be brilliant, but which were commercial failures. It's pretty intense stuff.
Gah, there's so much music out there that I've got to listen to!

Mine does too!!!! "Retroactive"? My mom's TV satellite has Sirius stations on it, and there's one....what's it called....First Wave? Anyway, it's similar but slightly better than "Retroactive," which seems to play way too much The The for my tastes. Anyway, First Wave also has a show hosted by Richard Blade, and that is FANFREAKINGTASTIC!
In some ways, that may be for the best...because then it didn't get overexposed....right?
Today's New Wave song of the day: "Wouldn't It Be Good" by Nik Kershaw. Delightful.

Ooo! Nik Kershaw! Thank you for reminding me who else I was meaning to track down this week while on my 80s kick. (Lot's of New Wave, but also lots of stuff like Rave-Ups, Descendents, Icicle Works, etc. -- basically the gamut of the stuff that formed my teen years.) Somewhere, I still have a copy of that Nik Kershaw concert that they used to show on MTV fairly regularly. Sadly, I doubt the video tape is even remotely viewable anymore. It would probably crumble into moldy dust if I even thought about putting it in a VCR.
Kore, I preferred Talk Talk's self-titled song to "It's My Life", as well, although I think I liked "Life's What You Make It" the most.

I love Depeche Mode too! Yesterday at the gym I was watching some countdown show on VH1 and they were featured. Then last night I dreamed I went to one of their concerts.
Dave Gahan is putting together another solo album. It's supposed to come out this fall.
