The Smiths totally count. In large amounts. ;D !!! Seriously, There Is a Light... gives me goosebumps and makes me cry. That's how much I adore it. Though, if I follow your theory, since Morrissey and Johnny Marr now hate each other, that would mean... ETA: Yay! This thread has made me a Lord! *does little dance*

Fucking LOVE Ultravox... "Hymn," "All Stood Still," "Reap the Wild Wind".... YAY for the Ultravox love. Okay, I'm going to give this list thingy a try BUT, I want it known from the outset, that it's only stuff I can think of right now, is not conclusive, complete or anything else. [/end lawyer caveats] Nor will it include my beloved Depeche Mode because, frankly, they deserve a page of lists all their own. 1. Cause & Effect --- It's Over now 2. Cause & Effect --- Inside Out. (Hell, just insert put their entire first two albums here) 3. Living in a Box - Living in a Box 4. Belouis Some --- Imagination (one of my top 10 favorites) 5. Dexy's Midnight Runners -- Come on Eileen (one of my top 5 favorite songs of ALL (ALL!) time) 6. Blondie -- Call me 7. Erasure -- Ship of Fools (Chains of Love, Love to Hate you, Chorus) 8. Monaco -- What do you want from me? 9. Information Society -- Peace & Love, Inc. 10. Midnight Oil -- Bed are Burning 11. Enigma -- Mea Culpa (Armand Van S-omething version esp.) 12. Bronski Beat -- Why? (and Hit that Perfect beat) 13. Alphaville -- Big in Japan, Sounds like a Melody (and most of that entire album) 14. Duran Duran -- Wild Boys 15. Eurythmics -- Sweet Dreams, Here Comes the Rain, Love is a Stranger 16- Imagination -- Just an Illusion 17- A-ha -- Here I stand and face the rain 18- Sinead O' Connor -- Troy (& Jackie) 19- Camouflage -- Love is a Shield 20- Billy Idol -- Rebel Yell (one of my top 10 songs), White Wedding 21- Sisters of Mercy -- This Corrosion 22- New Order -- Shellshock, Blue Monday, and almost every song on Substance Doubt the following count as NW but what the hell, I'll toss them in: Pet Shop Boys (sorry, they're pop in my mind) -- What have I done to deserve this?, So hard, Being Boring, Suburbia, Opportunities Real Life -- Send me an angel Roxy Music (although I don't consider them NW)-- Slave to Love Modern Talking -- You're my heart, You're my soul Howard Jones -- What is love? Gah, you see, I can't do lists for this sort of thing. These are just what I can come up with off the top of my head. God, I'm a bore.

Though, if I follow your theory, since Morrissey and Johnny Marr now hate each other, that would mean... ETA: Yay! This thread has made me a Lord! *does little dance* Lord----of the DANCE? (Sorry, the more exhausted I get, the stupider my sense of humor.) Hmmm....well, I'd never considered Morrissey and Marr as a couple, but you know, it does get awfully lonely out there on the road. And Morrissey? No one really believes you're celibate, honey. You can stop now. Really. Iceblink, the idea of Smith/Morrissey slash is both horrible and hilarious. However, I think I may top that. I once read Alex Kapranos (like, lead singer of Franz Ferdinand) and Morrissey slash. I'm talking graphic. YIKES! I couldn't listen to either band for a while after that. Oh, right, topic. So there seems to be general agreement that Blondie is a New Wave band and not a pop band? May I ask why you all think so? I don't disagree, but again, I'm curious how these artists are grouped and why. Edited to add: If my constant questioning bugs or gets redundant, just let me know. I'm afraid I'll get carried away in my glee for this thread.

Oh, right, topic. So there seems to be general agreement that Blondie is a New Wave band and not a pop band? May I ask why you all think so? I don't disagree, but again, I'm curious how these artists are grouped and why. Well, I'm on the fence when it comes to Blondie but I figured that my endless comments on narrowing the definition of NW, or my exclusion of groups was getting old, so I just gave up and went with the flow. That said, (IMO) Blondie is more New Wave than the B-52s, Roxy Music, Nik Kershaw, Paul Young and some others which have been listed here. Why? Well, again, I lack the knowledge of musical technicalities to tell you that but songs like the one about the snake in the grass have the beat, background elements and more to qualify a bit. (Sorry for the vagueness and inability to remember names but I suffer from insomnia and I'm going on 48 days now. So I'm lucky I remember my own name at this point.) Speaking only for myself, I think this is all damn fun. And I love your questions. Also, trying to nail down definitions or the rest just makes it seem more like a community effort in your thesis. In a microscopic, totally irrelevent way, of course, but it makes me feel as though we're sharing in it a way.

Blondie came out of the CBGB scene of the late 70s, Debbie was the lead singer of the Stillettos (sp?) who were mostly considered punk. I think it was pretty natural to group Blondie in with the new wavers since that scene rose up post-punk—despite "Heart of Glass" being a "disco" song, but I think "Denis Denis" is a pretty good new wave song. Oh, and "Parallel Lines" and "Eat to the Beat?" Two of my most favorite records ever.
Fave songs:
Boomtown Rats: Like Clockwork, Diamond Smiles, Joey's on the Street Again, Rat Trap, Banana Republic, and I Don't Like Mondays (even though I'm sick of it, it's the song that got me into everything) Ultravox: Vienna Tears for Fears: Shout Soft Cell: Sex Dwarf Falco: Der Kommisar M: Pop Muzik Gary Numan: In the Park Psychedelic Furs: Love My Way The Cure: Killing an Arab Talk Talk: It's My Life, Talk Talk The Smiths: Panic, Reel Around the Fountain, Meat is Murder, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want Echo and the Bunnymen: Never Stop New Order: Blue Monday Ministry: Effigy (I'm Not an), Work for Love Felony: Everwhere That I'm Not Go Gos—This Town (awesome, awesome song!) Pete Shelley: Telephone Operator, Homosapien Tones on Tail: Go! Bauhaus: Bela Legosi's Dead Captain Sensible: Wot, Happy Talk Haysi Fantasi: Shiny, Shiny Flock of Seagulls: Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You) Eurythmics: Love is a Stranger
Man, if someone would ever build a time machine, my first—and only–destination would be 1983. Good times, good times.

Ah, Ministry's "Work for Love"...! SO good!
So, Kafka, you'll easily include Living in a Box as New Wave, but balk at adding Howard Jones?!? ;D Seriously, the New Wave Haircut 100-Splitting is gonna be WAY fun! I love thinking of some obviously cross-genre bands (like Blondie) in New Wave contexts.
p.s Obviously, I LOVE lists!

Oh, Belouis Some's song from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, "Round Round," is splendid! And how could I forget Howard Jones' "New Song" And Psychedelic Furs in general? "Heartbreak Beat" and "All of This and Nothing." Also, how could I forget Human League ((Keep Feeling) Fascination), and my favorite New Wave-y song of all...oh it's so good: "Let Me Go"--Heaven 17.

But things get fuzzy at 3 a.m. when you're hitting 48 hrs without sleep. Carrier76's mention of Heaven 17 reminds me of one of my favorite songs: Fascist Groove Thang. And how could I have forgotten Talk, Talk, one of the bands that got me through my teenage years? Love them!

"Living in a Box" reminds me of "Can't Buy Me Love." That's all I have right now.

I had the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" as my ringtone, then I eventually dropped the phone in the sink and I didn't want to buy music again for the new phone.
If I had to pick one, I guess "No Easy Street" is my favorite Furs song, but I also love everything on their first album- "Imitation of Christ", "Sister Europe", "Wedding Song". Also, "Into You like A Train", and of course "PiP". I never bought Mirror Moves for some reason..
Favorite Depeche Mode- everything on Violator. I really like "Blue Dress" which doesn't get that much love. I'm pissed that they didn't put the "Halo" video on the singles DVD set and I had to buy the old Strange and Strange Too videotapes. Trivia: A young brunette Jenna Elfman is the taller dancer in the Halo video.
Everything Counts, Behind the Wheel- I can never remember the title of this song even though I know the opening chords like the back of my hand, Never Let Me Down Again, It's No Good, Suffer Well, The Sinner in Me.
I couldn't stand Songs of Faith and Devotion when it came out and it turned me off to DM for awhile, but now I don't mind it so much. Plaiyng the Angel brought me back, and I finally saw them live.
Any love for Morrissey's Vauxhall and I album? I love "Speedway". The British magazine Uncut had a long story and interviews of The Smiths (minus Morrissey) for the anniversary of The Queen is Dead. It might have been the Nov. or Dec. 2005 issue.
