Favourite Cover Songs

I had a quick squiz and couldn't find a similar thread, so I'm just here to ask you: What's your favourite cover song? Most people hate the idea of a cover version, but if an artist can re-interpret a song (rather than spit out a carbon copy) and put his/her/their on spin on it, then I have no qualms.

My favourite would have to be Ryan Adams' cover of Wonderwall by Oasis. I can't say that I like it MORE than the original because it's so different, but it definitely resonates more with me on an emotional level. It's heartbreakingly beautiful, and as Asshat-y as Ryan is reported to be, I adore his voice.

I agree, that version is beautiful.

I also love Eva Cassidy's version of Time After Time. She also just puts so much emotion into the song that it takes on a sadder meaning than the original.

This may be a very unpopular opinion, but I adore Guns N' Roses version of Live and Let Die.

U2's version of "Dancing Barefoot." And Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa's cover of "(Baby) One More Time." I used to make my undergrads write compare/contrast essays on that last one.

GNR's "Live and Let Die" is good....both are good, GNR's is just different.

I love "Wild Horses" by the Sundays. Beautiful.

I much prefer Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt." The same goes for Bananarama's version of "Venus" (but not their version of "Kiss Him Goodbye" - ugh).

I like them both but the Reznor version just seems so whiney "I hurt myself today. To see if I still feel." Wah, quit whining about how dark you are!

But the Cash version really is so much more sympathetic. Without changing the lyrics, the song became about an old man's final years while he dealt with the lonliness and pain of growing older.

I second the Sunday's "Wild Horses" & Bananarama's "Venus."

I'm going to add Tiffany's "I Saw Him Standing There." I realize the Beatles are considered sacred but the song suits a then-teenage Tiffany. She's all excited like a schoolgirl should be. I found Paul McCartney to be smug in the original.

Tori Amos' cover of "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" is really more violent than the original. She's so calm that the atrocity and misogny are clearly brought out of the song.

<small voice> I really like Lindsay Lohan's cover of Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen." </small voice> I like how it has an orchestral feel to it.

Aimee Mann's cover of "The Scientist" blows the original out of the water. It is also one of the most perfect breakup songs ever.

I also have a live version of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club covering The White Stripes' "Hardest Button to Button". Very sexy.

I love Travis' cover of "...Baby One More Time," it's so much better than Britney Spears. They added some real emotional weight to it and the stripped down accoustics only contribute to that feeling.
