On the way home tonight, I heard a hard rock cover of Genesis's "Land of Confusion," and I thought it was pretty good. Of course, I had the puppet video running through my head the whole time. That would be Disturbed. Awesome song. ;D Dynamite Hack does a cover of NWA's "Boyz in tha Hood". It's really mellow and catchy at the same time. I think Fiona Apple has done several great covers, including "Across the Universe" and Hendrix's "Angel"

Ann and Nancy Wilson had a side project called The Lovemongers. They did a wonderful cover of Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" on the Singles soundtrack. Even better than the original. They do a great "Rock'n' Roll" live, too. Ann Wilson is an awesome singer.

I was just making my friend listen to this tonight. It's one of my favorite covers and has been for years.

Not to nitpick, but isn't "Boyz N tha Nood" an Eazy E solo song? That said, I love the Dynamite Hack cover.
More covers I like: Los Lobos doing "Mustang Sally"
Joe Cocker's version of "The Letter." His voice has the perfect growl for it.
Susan Tedeschi's rendition of "Angel from Montgomery." Just beautiful.

The Pretenders do a *great* cover of "Angel of the Morning". I don't care if I first discovered it on the Friends soundtrack, it kicks ass. Of course, I'm half in love with Chrissy Hynde anyway. Oh, another good cover from that CD is Paul Westerberg (of the Replacements) covering Jonathan Edwards' "Sunshine".
Yeah, now you know my dark secret. But dammit, there's some great artists on there.

Okay, I think I have to shoot myself in the face. How could I forget Elvis Costello's cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Brilliant Disguise?" I like it even better than the original. Elvis C. does great acoustic work.

Ben Folds' cover of Dr.Dre's Bitches Ain't Shit is pure genius. Seriously.

I'm fond of the Ben Folds Five cover of the Flaming Lips' She Don't Use Jelly. Wonderfully lounge-y and fun.
I love the Scissor Sisters cover of Comfortably Numb. So gloriously disco-y.
I am also a huge fan of Sting's version of Mac the Knife. It's darkly upbeat and brings back the twisted aspect of the song.
Speaking of dark songs, I have decided after listening to a ton of versions of the song Gloomy Sunday that I prefer Diamanda Galas' version by far. Her version sounds tortured and gloomy and full of despair and the music arrangement just fits the mood of the song perfectly. Best of all, she doesn't include the "I was only dreaming" verse that I hate.

I also have to second "Dancing Barefoot" by U2
I think the musician that kicks my ass with covers is Tori Amos. From her version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to "I'm Not in Love". I find myself just in awe.
