bstewart, that is one of the saddest songs ever and a permanent fixture on my iPod. Doesn't remind me of anyone in particular, just my typically adolescent longings...thanks for the memory!

When I was with my dad in the ICU shortly before he died, Green Day's "Time of Your Life" popped into my head -- don't know why, because I wasn't a Green Day fan and I'm not sure I'd ever heard the entire song at that point -- and now I listen to the entire song, think of him, and cry whenever it comes on the radio. I also cry whenever I hear "You Are My Sunshine," because my late grandma used to sing it.
Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" makes me cry, as does Iz Kamakawiwo'ole's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

Have you heard Willie Nelson's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"?

Speaking of Willie Nelson, I have to nominate a song he dueted with Ray Charles and that was Seven Spanish Angels. I am not really a Willie Nelson fan or country in general but this is such a beautiful and sad song. In fact, someone really close to me, a person who in fact probably saved my life, had this as his favorite song. Anyway, he passed away a few years back and we just could not come up with a song to play as we laid his urn of ashes into the ocean so they just played a generic instrumental song no one had ever heard of. I do not know for the life of me why I did not think of this song as he drove us kids crazy playing it all the time but I do know I will regret for the rest of my life not having it played at his funeral. I blame the emotion of the time but still. I should have remembered.

Have you heard Willie Nelson's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"? Oooo, that's one of the most frequently played songs on my ipod! Love Willie, love the song. It works equally well as a mournful ballad, uptempo jazzy number (favourite version: Artie Shaw) or any other number of interpretations.

Last night, during the George Jones tribute during the Kennedy Center Honors, I was reminded that "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is still one of the saddest damn songs ever written. Even when someone other than George (in this case, Alan Jackson) is singing it.

stalemate, what a great video! And so much better, I think, than his album version.

I love that Tim Buckley video from The Monkees. I read that Mickey Dolenz directed that episode. He had Tim perform at an LA club and asked him to perform on the show.
