Hugs Fitz. I'm so sorry, I was rooting for NI and Ireland. None of the countries I wanted made it through the play offs. It will be strange not having Italy and the US this time around. I guess I'm suppose to root for Sweden and Denmark because of our nordic roots.... but I don't, haha. I'm not sure if I'll go to Russia next year. My sister and BIL will most likely go but for me I think it's just too far away. I think I'm leaning more towards beer and wine rather than straight up vodka but that might change!

Iceland in with Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria for WC in Russia, though enough group. Go Iceland I'm totally in your camp.

We handled Ronaldo just fine last year and managed to piss him off in the process. Messi will be no problem. We beat Croatia last summer and Nigeria? Lars will know what to do, he will help us out! ~ The ultimate Icelandic optimist (possibly drunk) We have a saying in Iceland when met with seemingly impossible challenges like this one. “Þetta reddast!” (This will work out just fine... somehow!)

So Ireland beat USA in a friendly in Dublin last night that in its self is fine sorry US folk but its not the most notable thing about the match which was also long standing reliable John O Shea last game for Ireland. Cheers John for the memories. No what was notable was that for Pride month Irelands jersey for the team look like thisin support of LGBT rights. It may seem like a small gesture but not for a sport like football(only look at some comments in the link) also when you think homosexuality was still illegal when Ireland played in their 1st WOrld Cup in 1990 (decriminalized in 1993). Anyway onwards to the World Cup just about 2weeks to go now, so 👏 Go Iceland 👏

I was at Croke Park that morning walking along the Etihad Skyline and the tour guide pointed toward Aviva Stadium to tell us about John O'Shea--after briefing us that soccer was considered a foreign sport and only temporarily played on GAA grounds. Re: the World Cup. Someone forwarded me this longish piece about the state of US soccer, and it's really interesting, with a lot of grim undertones. I haven't played on a team since I was 9, so I don't know a lot about the psychology of playing and coaching, and this article has a lot of that. Nutmeg News also has advice for US fans on how to choose a soccer team. The 2018 World Cup Guide For The Economically Anxious Voter. NN is The Onion of soccer.

It’s 2:45PM and I’m getting drunker by the minute watching the game! Beer and wine and walking around the house nervously glancing at the TV. This is too much!
ETA: YESSSS! Messi who?? Hahaha!

It was glorious! And I generally don’t have any hard feelings toward Messi. Well done, Ísland!

Damn, I missed it. I am determined to watch as many matches as possible, since I live for this every four years.
Who are you guys backing this time around? I still have heart for Spain and Germany, but have my eye on some sentimental favorites like Iceland. I'm not ruling out Belgium for their massive attacking power. They've been on fire lately.
Let's not forget to spot the hotties. We can applaud the athleticism on display, but a little eye candy never hurts.

I do have a bit of Messi fatigue, but he's also on my list of people I don't want to hear anything bad about--yesterday the analysts remarked that Messi was the only player from Argentina to spend time with fans at the team hotel, which I thought showed a lot of character.
My bracket is a mess already, although so far still intact. I think Germany will win overall, but I'm here for all the games and am overly irritated that a trip to a major professional conference in a city I love is interfering with my World Cup consumption.
