So, was the mother truly crazy and putting rat poison in Simon and Brittany's food? Didn't she live with them? And had a very weirdly close relationship with both of them? And she's the only one who wasn't poisoned...
I guess Brittany went faster because she was so skinny.

And she's the only one who wasn't poisoned... If that's what happened, it sounds like Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a caretaker inflicts illness on someone else to get attention. If true, a tragic story just became even sadder.

If it were Manchausen there would be a history. I remember reading stories about Shannon being very adamant about Brittany's prescription drug "needs" and being the one who always made sure Brittany was "taken care of." Hmmmm.
It's so hard to believe that Brittany's mom would do something like this as an act of coldblooded murder, but she did have the motive of being left Brittany's estate. The only other scenario I can think of is that Simon killed Brittany mistakenly believing he would be the one left with the estate and then Brittany's mom figured it out and decided to kill Simon the same way he killed Brittany as an act of revenge. The facts available are so bizarre that anything is possible at this point.

Maybe mom went bonkers because her daughter was starting to make a life for herself without mom? Wasn't the story that Brittany said she thought she was going to die that last day and her mother still didn't take her to the hospital? If her mother did it, I bet it wasn't for money.
I don't know. I hope it wasn't her mother that killed her because cases where parents kill their own children make me especially sad.

Unbelievable. This story just gets more bizarre as time passes.

This is straight out of a Lifetime movie. Really sad.

WTF? This is so disturbing. I really never fully absorbed her passing, because it was all morbid and strange. And it seemed glossed over fairly quickly (IMO) in the media. I never bought the black mold story, either out of cynicism or ignorance of its toxicity. But the couple dying one after the other always struck me as suspicious.

Yeah. So, there are a couple weird things to remember about this case:
1. The mother was pretty adamant about not testing the house for black mold.
2. When Simon was found dead, it was discovered that he and Brittany's mom were sleeping in the same bed. Were they having an affair when Brittany was alive?
3. If the mom wanted the money, then it backfired. Brittany left her money to Simon, who then left her fortune to his mother.
4. It was Brittany's father who ordered independent testing for poison since the county coroner didn't test for it. The father has spoken out in the past that he believed the mom was poisoning her. Whaaaat?

I didn't realize that. I thought mom got everything. Is it possible she wasn't aware that Brittany had changed her will? Did Simon convince Brittany to leave everything to him and not inform her mom of the change? That would point the finger more at Simon as far as motive goes, but obviously, he turned out to be a victim. It's all so convoluted.

Wait! Upon Googling #3, that might not be true. She might have willed it all to her mom. The kids at ONTD -- where I got that tidbit of info -- were wrong, hah. People magazine is saying that her will was never updated after marrying her husband. So, her Mom got it all.
