The posters on Alkon's bb are notoriously misogynistic. All women are sociopathic, gold-digging, sperm stealing whores who live to use and abuse poor, innocent, vulnerable men. Therefore, eventhough this choad borrowed money from HIS grandmother to finance upgrades to HIS property and apparently is still employed, it's his ex-girlfriend's, who no longer even lives there, moral duty to pay the entire loan amount, while he pockets the money from the increased sale price of the condo. I disagree with the bolded. I think Amy Alkon most of the time gives fairly common-sense, street-smart advice. She didn't tell the guy to sue his ex-GF in court for the charges, she blamed him for stupidly acquiescing to her wishes! I don't think her response intimated that she felt sorry for the "poor woobie" at all, it's actually a fairly blunt reality check for the letter-writer. I actually enjoy reading her column, naturally YMMV.

Here's another gem from Amy Alkon: This 35 year old man in Scotland found a passed out 15 year old girl on the street, picked her up and carried her to his house, invited a 14 year old boy over for the evening also, the boy declined, went home, told his mother about the girl who had woken up and was screaming, the mother called the cops, they found the girl in his bedroom. It turns out that she'd been raped. The guy was arrested, six years later, during the appeals process, it turned out that the sperm belonged to three other men so he was released. Alkon, naturally, thinks that this man was a good samaritan who should be commended for grabbing an incapacitated minor off the street and taking her into his bedroom and that the girl should be sent to prison. My guess is that he grabbed her for the obvious reason and either the cops got there in time or he used a condom since unlike Amy's posters, I don't live in a world full of unicorns and rainbows and don't buy for one minute that he was trying to 'help' her. Keep in mind that she was unconscious, and for all he knew, had od'ed or was suffering from a head injury. He did NOT call for an ambulance or try to contact her parents. But, as any reader of Alkon's blog knows, all men are wonderful, honorable people and all rape accusations are false.

If I'd found a teenage girl in that state I'd have called the cops and an ambulance. I would not take her home with me and INVITE ANOTHER GUY OVER FOR THE EVENING. Thank God he told someone.

What's really disturbing is the number of commenters who denounced the 15 year old as a slut and felt so sorry for the 35 year old who carted a drunk kid off to his house.

I enjoy reading "Dear Prudence" in Slate. Today one of her answers had a (Freudian?) typo that just DELIGHTED me. Instead of "You can stick to your principles", her answer says "You can stick your principles" . . . such good advice!

I love Dear Prudence. I have no idea what planet Amy Alkon and her ilk are from. I made the mistake of posting a comment on something linked through her once -- I think it was an NY Times article about men pining for the good old days a la Mad Men. I was immediately accused of lying about being married for several years and expecting my husband to contribute at home somewhat. It was totally off the rails.
I think Alkon is completely insane.

Her responses definitely seem to have the tone of "you chose him/her so you're stuck. Suck it! I never made that kind of mistake, so I'm better than you."
