Wow, that situation, if real, is wacko. The part I found hard to believe is that the boss didn’t know how to use Word!

The part I found hard to believe is that the boss didn’t know how to use Word! Sadly, I believe that. When I was an office manager a while ago, I came in one morning only to be chewed out by my boss because the printer had run out of paper a couple hours after I'd left the previous evening, and he didn't know how to refill it. He was a PhD chemical engineer.

We once asked my boss, a structural engineer, if he would stop and pick up a dozen donuts for the office on his way in. Ten minutes later, he called from Dunkin Donuts and said, "I need help. I don't know how to do this."

My first job out of college was with a CPA who was an older gentleman. He was very attached to his software programs, so he was using DOS based bookkeeping software and paid extra for a DOS based tax program. Because the bookkeeping program was so out of date, we would use it only for general ledger accounting and to create a trial balance. The trial balance was then entered into Excel to create actual financial statements. It was clunky but it worked. Until the day he demanded that we run a 10-key tape to make sure the financial statements 'footed' correctly. That was when we realized that he didn't know the difference between Excel and Word - he didn't know that Excel was doing the adding for us. We quickly arranged a class for him at Comp USA. His world crumbled the day the tax software people announced they just weren't going to do DOS based anymore. Dark days indeed.

LOL. How do you not know how to shop? My issue with donuts is I don't want to pick them out. Just give me a dozen assorted, person behind the counter.

Not to get into politics, but I recall a podcast episode (This American Life?) that featured journalists who did a deep dive into the Hilary email "scandal," and one of the reasons Hilary's people set up the external server was so she could get emails on her phone because she didn't know how to work a desktop computer. She and Bill came up before computers were an inescapable part of life, and then he became governor/president and they had people to do computer things for them.

Well, the letter writer has checked into the comments thread and is working with Allison on her resume, so not completely bogus, at least. I wonder if it's going to lead to AAM receiving more outlandish letters in hopes they'll get free services.

I do know people who don’t know how to use Word, but they are all male Baby Boomers who are afflicted with learned helplessness. Oh, wait, I know one woman in her late 70s who has bad eyesight. (These are folks who work in offices and have email, not retirees). I was guessing from the letter that Jill was in her 50s, so a young Baby Boomer. There was something about her going to a law office as well as running the non-profit? I’m just astonished that she’s managed to hold onto a job, since she doesn’t have any skills! I do remember hearing that about Bill and Hillary. It would drive me crazy to be that dependent upon other people for technology.

And it wasn't just Bill and Hillary who had that issue, a LOT of people in the Government do. Both Rice and Powell had similar set-ups for similar reasons, and as an IT the questions in the Facebook hearings were just....well stupid.
