Actually, I'm running the Children's and YA division of a literature scholarship conference and I had 9 Twilight papers submitted this year (out of about 50), some from very well-established professors. Really? What kinds of topics are being written about? (Feel free to answer me in the lit thread if you want - although there's a lot of crossover these days.) I'm actually going to go opening day - mostly because I'm leaving town the next day. Waiting might get me companions (my cousin's two daughters are in the right age group to be Twi-hards, although I'm not sure they actually are), but that would be dangerous if I'm laughing in all the wrong places, as I expect.

Only one on Harry Potter (we've been crammed with those in previous years). But I agree, the literary merit is nowhere close. I like them as popcorn or Twinky reading, though. Fair enough. I doubt anyone will still be writing about them once the novelty wears off, though, which was originally my point. I'm also curious about the topics of these papers, though. Are they about how SMeyer bastardized vampire legends? Dubious feminism?

With every movie clip that comes out, the more I'm convinced that Twilight will be as bad as Blood & Chocolate.

I just can't get past the "You brought a snack!" line that I've seen in the previews. The first time I saw that it was early one morning, and I was snickering about it all day long (which made for some slightly awkward moments here and there).
I know we have some diehard fans on the board, and honestly, I mean no offense, but this looks AWFUL.

Sorry for drifting off-topic, but a lot of peopel asked. If you want more info, feel free to PM me. Lessee. I have two papers on Vampires as romantic literature (one looking at romance novels and their basic model and how Twilight fits it, one how vampire literature fills the romance craving for people who don't like to admit they read romance). One on the vampire as superhero, one on how vampires are socialized in high school, a couple on the film (the conference will be after it so they just have to send me a proposal and write the paper later). I'm actually kind of surprised none of them took a feminist angle, but maybe everyone thought that was just TOO easy. And it is true, there won't be nearly as many of these written about once the novelty wears off, and they probably won't be studied the way Harry Potter is likely to be, except by children's literature grad students like yours-geeky-truly. I was just so stunned by the flood this year; we had 3-4 years of no fewer than 3 Harry Potter papers and there was just one lonely one this year. Oh, my that was horrible. I love that book, have met the author, and I just felt so bad for her!!!

The only thing about Twilight that is less embarrassing than the standard romance novel is the cover. Though wouldn't Sparkly!Fabio be hysterical?

I love that the woman who holds the apple on the cover[/color] actually has fans posing and taking pictures with her. Rob is very hit or miss for me in terms of looks...he was cute as Cedric, but he looks so unclean now. However, I'm becoming a fan just from his interviews: Source

That's just sad.
The thing about George Bush cracks me up, but this is my favorite answer: Haha!
