I can't figure out the appeal, and I say that as someone who has read all four. Wish fulfillment? Wanting the perfect guy? I thought that Twilight would have been a good stand-alone book, but I also liked New Moon. Eclipse was OK, but Breaking Dawn was the strangest shit I have ever read.
I can remember reading Twilight and thinking, "This is bad stuff." But I stayed up til 2am reading it. Interesting premise, terrible writing.

I remember reading an article on Stephanie Meyer in Newsweek or Time which compared her to J.K. Rowling. Because of that I was under the impression her books were actually good.
It's only when I came online that I realized her books were being made fun of so much.
Then of course I saw the trailer for the movie and realized why the books were being made fun of to such a great extent.
I kind of wonder if the actors were going by that Newsweek article when they accepted their parts.

I kind of wonder if the actors were going by that Newsweek article when they accepted their parts. I don't know when that came out, but since they had to have the script, and screentest, before getting the parts, I'm sure that wasn't it. I don't know--I'll be honest: the books aren't that well written, but the premise is good, so I find some of the hate towards them as amusing as the hype. There's plenty of crack-like books, and movies for that matter, out there, so what's one more? I'll see the movie at some point, but no way, no how, anytime on opening weekend. If I'm going to pay for admission, cheesy dialogue or not, I'd actually like to hear it rather than shrieking teenagers.

True, I was just jesting. But I have to admit I was kind of shocked when I saw the dialogue in the trailer. It's just so.....funny. I can understand the lead guy being frustrated by what was written for him but then at the same time he seems to hate the character he's playing which makes me wonder how he got round to taking the part (aside from money and being in a lead film.....although the actors in this movie seem like the type to run away from tweeny-fame.)
The premise in the Newsweek article sounded interesting to me so I thought this would be an interesting movie.
Now I think I just want to see it for the pretty actors and.......yeah, I'm not sure what else. Maybe the romance will be good. Judging from the trailers there seems to be a lot of chemistry between the actors. I guess I'll just have to cover my ears when Bella starts talking about how impossibly fast and strong her vampire boyfriend is.
There is one actor in this movie who seems to stand out. He has long blond hair which he ties back. He's the only one that sounded non-actory and convincing when saying his lines. And I saw some pictures of some of the other actors in this film and they're also as striking as the lead actors. I'm wondering how good (or not) they'll be. I'd sort of like to see them featured in the trailers as well.

From what he's said, he wanted to work with Kristen Stewart and Catherine Hardwicke. I think it's hard to judge just how a movie will turn out from the trailer. It gives you a good idea what it is about, but it's clips spliced together and sometimes there shit in the trailers that doesn't end up in the movie.
Oscar worthy? Hell no. Cheesy? Absolutely, but I think it's going to be pretty entertaining too. I'm seeing it opening night and I'm worried about shrieking teenagers as well as idiots going just to heckle the movie. Seriously, not cool.

Stephenie Meyer's writing is horrible, but the one thing she can do is create hooks. I think I read the first three books over a weekend. Like Cleolinda said, they're literary Twinkies. The problem with Twilight is that for many it's their first experience of a fandom ever, and the behavior of the die-hards and the Twimoms reflect that. They get way too immersed in the TwuLuv! of Edward and Bella. I think Rob also said somewhere that his audition was basically making out with Kristen on Hardwicke's bed. Which...yeah. I was going to sneak in on a weekday in the morning, but then I realized it's Thanksgiving Break, so it's unlikely I'll escape the fangirls. I'm still not giving Meyer my money. I'll buy a ticket for something else instead. Quite a few minutes of footage has leaked in the past month, and the acting and dialogue was just as awkward and bad as it was in the trailer, from the clips I've seen. I will say that the vampire baseball scene looks hilarious. I wonder whose idea it was to have the family wear actual baseball uniforms. Vampire Baseball clip!
I'm still hoping that the "Snakes on a Plane" effect will happen when this movie releases, but it seems unlikely.

I remember reading an article on Stephanie Meyer in Newsweek or Time which compared her to J.K. Rowling. Because of that I was under the impression her books were actually good. In the sense that they're both women who write fantasy novels for younger audiences...OK. But the HP books actually have intellectual merit and, I think, will prove to be timeless. I doubt that the Twilight series will be studied in college courses in ten years. I also don't see Vampire Baseball catching on as a collegiate IM sport a la Quidditch. The Twilight movie might actually be better than the first Harry Potter movie, though. I know that's not saying much.

Wow, that baseball scene is all kinds of shit. I love it how when they show the cast on the right hand corner, Rob looks completely embarassed.

Actually, I'm running the Children's and YA division of a literature scholarship conference and I had 9 Twilight papers submitted this year (out of about 50), some from very well-established professors. Only one on Harry Potter (we've been crammed with those in previous years). But I agree, the literary merit is nowhere close. I like them as popcorn or Twinky reading, though.
