He's been in love with her since season 1. It's old now.

Mary isn't a nice person, so I've never really understood why the wonderful & sensitive Marshall would be interested in her. It didn't mesh for me. I always thought they should remain BFFs. But...they just had to keep on pushing what was obviously a one-sided crush.

But...they just had to keep on pushing what was obviously a one-sided crush. That actually plays into my beef with the show - why are any of these dudes ga-ga about Mary? Yeah, Mary is hot, but she's also mean and not a very nice person. And yet every dude falls all over her. She had zero respect for Raph and treated him like crap, yet he was desperately in love with her and badly wanted to marry her (until he finally woke up and broke it off - the only smart thing the show has done about that relationship). Marshall sticks by her through thick, thin and partially skimmed, and she just dumps on him. She says two sentences to Faber about not letting his crap dad rule his life, and suddenly he's a changed man - who is crazy about Mary. Even the witnesses act like she's magic. The closest they had to a witness not liking her was the one from this season who "fired" her and took Marshall, but the show made it clear that it wasn't about Mary, but rather that the witness was so unhappy in the program nothing was going to work for her (even after Marshall moved hell and Satan's china hutch for her). Mary Shannon is dangerously close to being a Mary Sue. If the show gets renewed, I hope they allow at least someone (who isn't evil) to not like her.

I don't know what it is about Steven Weber that I don't like. I loved him on Wings, but every other show...hate him. Of course, they would pair Mary with him.

The only way that Marshall's crush on Mary would possibly benefit the show would be to analyze why handsome, intelligent and sensitive Marshall would fall for someone who needs as much fixing as Mary. They sort of addressed this with Mary in that "how they first met" episode, where Marshall connects Mary's runaway dad with her profession as someone who chases people. Likewise, Marshall's job involves giving people new lives, and...well, I don't know. I also see a little bit of the "biatch that men inexplicably worship even though she's as cuddly as a cactus." I would also be okay if the show added a WTF? storyline addressing why men fall for Mary, but I doubt they will. On a related note, I liked the Laura San Giacomo storyline. I really believed their awkward friendship, and Mary seemed really hungry for human contact beyond her job.
I wish they would do more with Erika Alexander's character.

I don't like him either (not even on Wings). There's just something about him that rubs me the wrong way. I can see how he can be funny and charming, but he really feels like someone I could only handle in small doses and his schtick gets old REAL quick. And he seems to play the same kind of mildly douche-y guy in everything that he does. They have addressed that he's something of a fixer. He loves his job so much because he loves seeing people get a second chance and improving themselves, and he seems to think that if Mary would just get out of her comfort zone and actually try, she could improve herself too. But dang - he puts up with huge amounts of abuse from Mary. It really makes me wonder why he hasn't just said, "That's it - I'm out."

I like Steve Weber in general, but I don't like the character he's playing. Can't even remember his name, either! It feels like he's a cheap (and less hot) replacement for Dershowitz, who challenged Mary in basically the same way. I think a Dershowitz/Mary ship would have been awesome, and the new character just doesn't measure up. It made me wish that Dershowitz had magically joined the FBI, because FBI makes a lot more narrative sense than "local beat detective" or whatever Dershowitz' shoehorned role on the show was.

OUCH. You were all totally right--I just saw the season finale and the scene with Marshall? Oh dear.
I am glad Brandi will be getting less screen time, but I still wish the writers would work on the inner lives of Stan or Marshall or anyone. I like Mary enough, but she's on the verge of turning into Elliot Stabler.

I have to admit, I thought there was tenderness but not real attraction between Mary & Marshall...till this episode. I wonder if his love declaration was meant to spruce up ratings? It felt dishonest to the character I knew, at any rate.
I'm over Brandi as well. I haven't cared one iota about her storyline this season, when I got a real kick out of her last year. Oh well.

Nah, they've written it as Marshall being in love with Mary since the first season. They are just pretty subtle about it and it only bubbles up to the surface on occasion - the first episode where it was really obvious was the episode from the first season when Marshall got shot, and it was super-obvious last season when he found out that Mary got engaged to Raph. I don't think it's a ratings stunt.
