Bumping this thread because I’m excited about his new movie, The Northman. I’m a big fan of Robert Eggers as a director, and absolutely LOVED The VVitch and The Lighthouse. I’m really excited because it looks like one of the most accurate movies portraying those who Viking in a long time. My major quibble: from what I’ve seen in previews, it looks like those who Viking look like they’re dirty all the time, which is contrary to evidence that they were the ones who were the oddballs because they bathe daily! It looks great, but I’ll have to wait until it streams somewhere (still anxious about COVID-19, it’s still around). Hell, I long sat through seasons after True Blood totally jumped the shark just for Alexander (ironically playing a character named Eric Northman), along with the actors who played Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten), Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll), and Lafayette (R.I.P., Nelsan Ellis). Also, I usually don’t go for guys who are very tall (I’m 5’ 2”, he’s 6′ 4½") or blonde, but I’ll definitely make Alexander an exception. He does seem very funny, calls himself a feminist, and is a very talented actor. Being very handsome also doesn’t hurt.

I went to see this with friends last night. I guess i am not a fan. I felt it was boring and pretty much everyone else in the theater kind of had the same reaction. I am interested in what you think of it when you go see it.

It was our first back to the theatre movie after a couple of years and it can only go up I guess. Not even ASkars could save it for me.

Yeah, I've liked Alex since True Blood (and then went back and watched Generation Kill, which was excellent). He works nonstop, but most of his output is mediocre. Big Little Lies is one of the best things he's done. On a shallow note, he burns the candle at both ends, and occasionally has shown up at a few events looking beyond rough. I have to side eye a guy who will be 46 this year and is, as we speak, at Coachella.

I just turned 40 and would love to go to Coachella, but would be in a sunscreen suit and umbrella to avoid the UV rays. I’m disappointed that The Northman may be a bore to sit through. Being a history nerd, I do appreciate the historical research behind the movie. sjankis630, ElleCee, or jynni: did the characters look dirty all the time?

From the trailer, they all look pretty grungy except for Nicole Kidman.

Saw it on Sunday and it was fine. Well made, well acted, a bit slow but overall held my attention. That said, part of the reason I found it interesting was because I was trying to pick out which parts lined up with Hamlet and The Lion King. I knew going in it was based on the story that Shakespeare based Hamlet off of so once I remembered Lion King = Hamlet w/ animals, it actually made it much easier to follow.
Skarsgard was very good even if his role called for a bit of scenery chewing.
I actually thought this was one of Nicole Kidman's better roles in a long time. She actually managed to disappear into the role pretty effectively, even after I had the "oh I didn't know Nicole Kidman was in this movie" moment when she first appeared on screen. Frozen face not quite as distracting as usual as the lack of facial expression seemed to work for the character.

I feel like I might have shared this before, but this is my favorite Alexander Skarsgard moment by far. The little catch in his voice when he voices his confusion over what he can eat just kills me. Also, there's a bit of irony in your "being very handsome also doesn't hurt" quote, because when looking for that video, I saw several that had titles indicating that Alexander thinks his handsomeness hurt his career. But I didn't click on any of them, so I'm not sure what they're about.

I could definitely see how being too handsome could ironically cut down on his believability in certain roles. It would be difficult to envision him as a loser with a moribund love life.
