She was really good in Sweeny Todd. Not the strongest voice, but good acting chops. I had mixed feelings about the film, but overall liked it and would recommend it. But given my, well, misgivings I headed to Rotten Tomates to read all the negative reviews. One reaction seemingly every reviewer shared was that Helena can't sing. Well, I sing and I beg to differ: I thought her voice was quite sweet and bell-like. The pitch was there and she did better than Madonna's Evita most of the time. True, she doesn't belt anything, and I guess that's the current fad for all "real singers", but after all this was a very intimate film, not a big Broadway live performance. Depp too underplayed all his lyrics(I thought she was a better singer than he, FWIW). All in all the whole thing was pretty enjoyable and I thought she suited the part as presented(before seeing it I thought she was terribly miscast-live and learn!). |
