I'm new to the world of iPod, and a friend told me about audible.com.
So, do any of you have a favorite narrator, or, a narrator that you feel ruins the book?
I'm going unabridged all the way; I'm looking up my favorite books, and I want the whole thing.

You can also get CD audiobooks from your public library and download them to your iPod.

There's also Librivox. I don't do well with audiobooks (I get distracted and suddenly, I've missed important plot points), so I can't vouch for quality, but the price is certainly fabulous!

The one I'm listening to now is Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen, read by George Wilson. This is an excellent narration; the pace is easy to listen to, and he does the different voices well. Very funny, too.
If I get CD audiobooks from the library, then they would go into my playlist on iTunes, right? Not in the Audiobook file? And they wouldn't be on the "Resume" choice when I need to take a break.

Yea! Someone opened an audiobook thread. I've been listening to audioboooks since they've been books on tape, and I checked them out one tape at a time at the library...I'm talking 15 years ago, here.....
I average "reading" 5 to 8 books a month, so that's a lot of books over the years.
Fav readers. Barbara Rosenblat, C. J. Critt, and George Guidall. Fav fav of all time, Frank Muller reading Pat Conroy "Beach Music." (unabridged, of course!) It got on Audie for best book and reader a few years ago. Breathtaking.
Frank Muller was the best, scary, impressive voice. He isn't able to do readings anymore (sad story), but go back to his past set of work, and he was amazing. Muller/Steven King....you are in for a ride.

My DH and I listened to David Sedaris narrating his own "Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim" after reading a review of it in the David Sedaris thread. It really is hysterical, even when it went into his issues about being gay. I thought that might turn DH off, but he was laughing along with me.

Yeah, David Sedaris is awesome - his readings are fantastic. I like them for listening to in the car, because the stories are short enough that you can just listen to one if you're going a short distance - it's nice and relaxing.

I love David Sedaris's audio books. Stephen Colbert is really good, too. I generally stick with non-fiction or short stories because I'll space off for a moment and miss something important.

I'm working my way through the books I enjoyed the most from the "In Death" series by J.D. Robb. So far I've listened to Naked In Death, Rapture In Death, and Ceremony In Death. The narrator, Susan Erickson, is excellent.

I just came off Itunes, and they are having a great sale on Literary Classics, only $1.95 for each of 39 classics. I listened to the previews, and the readers are on their game! (So many of these budget books have sucky readers....)
