For sure! DS9 was formerly the property of the Cardassians so all the hideous aesthetic choices can be blamed on them. There is actually a GREAT episode in Season 3 called "Civil Defense" that sort of addresses this backstory - the crew accidentally trips an old Cardassian security protocol which leads to a hilarious/horrifying domino effect on the whole station. It's one of my favorite episodes in the whole series. Also, in addition to the actual design, DS9 suffers from being difficult to remaster due to annoying technical factors although of course, Trekkies being Trekkies, there are some fan efforts to do this independently. Watched s1ep15 "Progress" and now I get it. It's the episode where Major Kira has to convince Mullibok to evacuate the moon he's built a farm on. Loved the set, the storytelling, and I think it's the first episode where Sisko lets some of his personality and compassion shine through and doesn't seem as wooden and stiff. The b-story of Nog and Jake trading one item for another in their quest for a profit was great, too. After that episode it felt like everything sort of fell into place for the show. O'Brien spends the next episodes complaining about the Cardassian computer system and then the ambassadors arrive and Sisko is pawning them off on Bashir and being super funny about it. And it's becoming clearer how Dax is filling the Data role with her 300 years of experience as a Trill. It's not a starship, but they're definitely dealing with all these characters who arrive from space and the constant drama and chaos it brings to their station. Anyway, it's clicking. Yay!!!! Yeah I think almost all of the Trek series (except the original) were a little rough at the beginning, but eventually get into a good groove. Have you gotten to the episode "Duet" yet? I think that episode is a little bit like DS9's equivalent to TNG's "Measure of a Man" (where they have the court case over Data's rights) in the sense that it's the episode that really crystallizes the entire philosophy of the series.

I did! Great episode. I also watched "Necessary Evil" last night and loved the flashbacks to when it was a Cardassian station. And the episode with Pel and Quark was fantastic. I had a hunch that Kira's role was written for Ro Laren and a quick Google search told me I was right. I think Ro would have been great in DS9, but I can't imagine it without Kira now. She's the perfect blend of spunk and sweetness while Ro was a little edgier.

She's the perfect blend of spunk and sweetness while Ro was a little edgier. Oh yes the Star Trek writers LOVED Ro Laren. They actually did exactly the same thing on Voyager too, tried to incorporate the character but the actress again said no, so the character became B'Elanna Torres instead. Much like with Kira, B'Elanna ended up fitting in so well that it's hard to imagine Ro instead (although Ro and Janeway squaring off could've been pretty interesting to see). When I first watched DS9, I really took for granted how great Kira was. On the whole I think she's what a lot of people are going for when they write a "strong female character" -- she is an absolute badass, but she's also allowed to be vulnerable and to have flaws that make sense. She's very well rounded.

New season of Discovery started last night. I've been waiting on this and it was delayed a couple of start dates due to post production issue because of Covid. I really enjoyed it. I like Discovery a lot and can't wait to see the rest of it.

Do you feel like you can start up again without knowing what happened in the last season? I liked the first season, but lost interest in the whole Spock storyline.

Butting in - I think you probably can with some CliffsNotes. The main overview is that Michael and the ship had to make a jump in time in order to save the galaxy (the ship had to go because a key the baddies needed was within the ship), so that’s what she did. The people still on Discovery are the people who volunteered to go with her. Others (Spock, Pike) elected to stay behind. There doesn’t seem to be any possibility of them going back, so it’s a mild reset, and you can probably pick up things from there since it’s all in this new time period and no one is looking to go back to any outstanding storylines in the original time period.

Continuing my pandemic binge of all things Star Trek, I'm almost done with season one of TOS and holy hell, Shatner was a fucking stud. Not old afro Shatner, yuck, but younger space cowboy Shatner? Yes please.

I don't know what happened between s1 and s2 but Shatner got way more...Shatner-y. The magic is gone. On the other hand, s2 Spock is looking preeeetty damn good.
I need to get out more. This stupid pandemic.

I watched TOS episodes so many times as a kid I practically have them memorized.

I don't know if this will sound weird, but there's something I find soothing about the audio of TOS. The bridge whistle noises, the sickbay machine noises. Even though TOS wasn't really a "formative" Trek series for me (I got into TNG and Voyager first) there's something strongly nostalgic about it. For all that TOS had no budget, they did a really good job of creating a consistent mood and feel.
"Balance of Terror" is still an incredible episode.
