No matter how much crap is/ends up on her acting roster, I will never be able to unsee that moment in her big scene with Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, over Jared Leto: "He was MY FRIEND, TOO." Spine chilling.

I know it wasn't a huge hit, but I loved her dark comedic side in Butter.

she has done a TON of crap. The worst was the talking cat movie with Kevin Spacey. I watched it because my daughter wanted to, but the whole time I'm sitting there thinking, "Jennifer, what are you doing? Why did you pick this? You are so much better than this awful tripe." I forgot she did Cyrano on Broadway with Kevin Kline after she had Violet.

In that family there’s one stable parent, Jen. I’m guessing she does easy projects that pay her bills and help her stay close to home because someone has to do it. If my ex-husband was Ben Affleck I wouldn’t feel comfortable with him being the full-time caretaker of my kids for weeks at a time.

I forgot she did Cyrano on Broadway with Kevin Kline after she had Violet. And she was horrible in it IMO. They aired it on PBS. She delivered all of her lines in the exact same cadence - very arch, very "I'm in a 19th century comedy and this is how these lines are supposed to be delivered." I had no idea what she was saying because it all sounded the same. Meanwhile, she was opposite Kevin Kline, who is probably the best in the world at that style. It did her no favors.

I just watched Catch and Release this past weekend on IMDB free movies with commercials and I gotta say Jennifer's upper lift in this movie is so full of fillers (especially in the opening scenes) that it was down right distracting.

I'm thinking the reason her career never really took off is because she's not extraordinarily talented.

I'm thinking the reason her career never really took off is because she's not extraordinarily talented. She's good in a very narrow range of roles but she's pretty atrocious outside her limited repertoire. Exactly. She's not a terrible actress, but it's not as if she sets the screen on fire when she appears.

Looking at her IMDB, it seems to me that she has worked pretty consistently but she has done a TON of crap. Like...a ton. Really a lot, with the crap. I think she has a lot of natural charm, but I don't know that she really has the drive or desire to seek out particularly challenging roles. I assume she's happy with the career she has, so more power to her. Yeah, when I look back at her career over the past decade, I do think she slowed down/made choices because of her kids, but...she's done some awful crap. Even when I was happy to see her get back into "Alias" shape for "Peppermint" I did not see "Peppermint" because the trailer came out and I thought, "Dear god, that looks awful." She actually reminds me a bit of Jennifer Aniston in that I think she has a limited range, is pretty good when she's in her wheelhouse, can occasionally branch out successfully, but good golly, it needs to be the right project. Aniston has tried to branch out to mixed results - sometimes it really works, others is really doesn't. But overall I think she's made better choices than Garner. Garner has tried to branch out from her "unimaginative family movie often with Christian undertones" lane she's been living in, and...mixed results. "Dallas Buyers Club" was a good move. "Camping" seemed like a good move - Lena Dunham project (Dunham is still marketed as some hot young genius), good cast (David Tennant? Great! Bridget Everett? Love her! Juliette Lewis? Hey, her quirk can be fun!), but...I couldn't get past the first episode because, just... everything was so insufferable. Maybe she turned in a good performance and/or the show got better, but I couldn't tell you because despite wanting to see it, I was immediately turned off by the Dunham-ness of it all and couldn't go back. It seems that's the case with most of the audience since it didn't make a big splash. I think "Butter" and "Juno" were good moves, but those were a while ago. "Peppermint" was an attempt to recapture the "Alias" magic, but it seems that the script was terrible. She needs a better agent or manager or someone to help her pick better projects. Aniston seems to be doing better in that department lately, maybe the two of them should have lunch and Aniston can give her some tips or at least the phone number of some key people.

She’s likable, but I agree that she’s not super talented. And I don’t think she’s ever had the it factor of someone like Reese, Sandra, or Julia. When I think back to most of her well-known roles, I’m pretty sure plenty of other actresses could have done better. At this point, it seems like she is happy being a mom and fangirling over Martha Stewart and Ina Garten. More power to her.
