I don't get the theory that Caroline married EA to gain a higher title. His HRH doesn't mean a thing; like all Germans from extinct royal houses, he uses his title socially. The country called Hanover ceased to exist when it was annexed to Prussia in 1848. German legally abolished all royal and noble titles after World War I. EA is not a royal and never has been. Amongst royals and the Gotha, etc, however, E-A does 'outrank' Caroline, a mere HSH [/sarcasm]. What makes the Hanoverians unique is their connection to the British crown. Hyper-technically, they can apparently still be considered (by those who give a crap about this stuff, which excludes us) Princes of Great Britain, based upon their descent from the Duke of Cumberland. Even though Hanover lost its independence in the 19th century, they, like many other former ruling and mediatized houses, were considered of "equal birth." Plus they got the Duchy of Brunswick restored when Kaiser Wilhelm II's only daughter married the son and heir. I mean, let's face it, it's all garbage. None of this has any value in the real world. It's just fun to watch all their pretensions. Ernst August even sought QE II's permission to marry Caroline. Speaking of Caroline, was a pregnancy ever confirmed? I'm with Yossarian, I don't know how E-A could even do the deed, given the state of his pickled, well...EVERYTHING.

It's a different story with E-A than with, say, the former royal houses of Romania and Yugoslavia. These guys actually *were* legally considered to be royalty in their native countries. But E-A never was, since the country he's supposed to be a "prince" of ceased to exist 150 years ago. Heck, this is true of all these so-called "royals" and "nobles" in Germany, clinging to meaningless titles.
Don't know about you, but it would be hilarious if someone called Caroline "Mrs. von Hanover."

If someone called him Herr von Hanover, he'd probably drop his pants and pee on the offender. He's so klassy.

Well, if this is true, what little respect I might possibly have had for her just went out the window. She could have been a real inspiration to a lot of women.
Does anyone have a link to a pcture of her daughter with Ernst? When she was a baby, the poor little thing looked just like him and I was curious to see if that had changed.
