Isn't Salinger the one that wrote Frankie and Zoey? Teenage me thought that was one of the most pretentious stories I had ever read and Ive refused to try to read anything else Salinger (sorry fans). I could so see Franco trying to get some deep meaning out of it.

Im guessing that his drug addled memory of his night with Lindsay is that he read to her. He probably spouted off some jibberish and gave her pubic lice.
