Whenever I watch it, I get inspired to clean my house.
I'm also guilty of telling my kids that I'm signing them up for an episode if they don't clean up their bedrooms.

I've never made it through an entire episode. I always get up and clean. Assuming they get the clutter gone, do they go back and check up on people? Are there supports in place to deal with the mental/emotional issues?

Are there supports in place to deal with the mental/emotional issues? They have followed up on a few, and I know for sure there were follow-ups with Betty, who re-hoarded up her home, then moved into her son's home and hoarded his place up so seriously that his children were removed by services. They also followed up on Paul who had the backyard junk collection, who collected more scrapmetal and was again in trouble with the city--I think they gave him another jail-or-clean ultimatum. And thanks, Mulva! I think a giant Hoarders live chat would be awesome. ![:-*](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/kiss.png)

The show gives painful insight into what I think is exclusively a first-world mental illness. I think this is what happens when even mild depression is not addressed. It also is inspiring. After the premiere episode last year, I got up and immediately started cleaning my house, especially my fridge and cabinets. I've gotten complacent lately, but I got a major wake up call when something fell under my computer stand, and I found that I had an inch of dust under there. No wonder my allergies won't let up. I went out and bought $50 bucks worth of vacuum bags, Swiffers, and all sorts of cleansers. But more importantly, I stopped putting off dealing with stuff until later. Last week I threw out 2 garbage bins worth of magazines going back to 2002 and mail from 2005. And I still have around 15 rubber totes to deal with. God knows what's in there.

My mom--who suffers from major depressive disorder--was once a major collector and now she's dangerously hovering in hoarder territory.

Very interesting point, Babycakes, but I wonder about like Adella, who wasn't unable to discard her garbage, or a shopaholic, she was actively collecting garbage. I know, in context, that first world nations produce more garbage and therefore there is still something to hoard, which makes Adella seem more aberrant than some of the others who have been profiled on the show. Hm...I will research this more.
And thanks for the suggestion. A lightbulb went off, and now I have a new lecture topic for when I discuss culture-specific disorders in anthropology.
ETA: I posted after a couple of glasses of wine and had to fix a few things. Heh.

Sir Patrick reminded me of a male version of Princess Winter Rose, with his delusions and mountains of sparkly cheap collector crap. Also, on the a&e boards, someone posted that he has online dating profiles up, in which he claims to be either 21 or 29. And they both live in Florida. Maybe they can hook up if Trisbob ever escapes!

Tomorrow there is a run of several Hoarders episodes, so if anyone wants to catch up they can set their DVRs... and gird their loins.

Man, I sure love me some Hoarders but the preview for the next new episode makes me want to ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) . And that's really saying something.

OMG, you guys! The possum from Hoarders is live blogging tonight. I'm kind of disturbed by how excited I am.
