I'm planning on seeing this on Wednesday with the boyfriend. Definitely staying over at his place that night. Just thinking about the very few images I've seen of the film kept me popping up in bed last night. The true test will be sleeping alone on Thursday night.

Saw this last night and ack. Big mistake, BIG. There were some parts that were a little over the top, but for the most part, I thought they had the portrayal of an escalating demonic infestation nailed. The growling, oh, the growling. I swear to God, I came in my front door, went straight for my sage kit and promptly smudged the entire house. (shudder)

Saw this today and was terribly disappointed. I just didn't find it scary. At the end I, and several other people, burst out laughing and said "that was it?" I think all the hype ruined it for me, probably if I'd seen this without any prior knowledge it would have been much better.

I saw The Blair Witch Project after it has been seriously hyped up, and when the credits ran, the entire audience just went, "Huh. So that was that."

When I finally saw Blair Witch Project I also had the "That's it?" reaction. I must admit if I was in the situation the characters were in I probably would have been terrified but it just didn't translate well for me. Then again, I watched the movie when it came Showtime so watching on the small screen may have hindered the experience.
While I'm not a Blair Witch fan and have not seen Paranormal Activity (and probably won't due to the hype) I do appreciate both films showed you don't have to resort to torture porn to scare an audience. From what I understand PA like BW plays on our fears of the unknown which is kinda what many classic horror films did. I really do hope the success of PA inspires filmmakers to think of ways other than torturing someone to scare an audience.

I completely agree. Gore and torture porn has never really done anything for me. It's the psychological stuff that freaks me out. I often think it's better that you never show "the monster" because often your imagination does a much better job of freaking you out than the latest CGI.

Unlike Blair Witch, however, I thought the acting in Paranormal Activity was solid. For the most part, I thought the actors managed to maintain their credibility as people filming their own story with a home camera, and I was surprised that I didn't find myself asking "Why the hell doesn't he turn the camera off?" more often. Also, I thought the Micah character in particular had believable and well-written psychology, complete with realistic reactions to most of the demon's activities.
Much better than Blair Witch, IMO.

The actor's did manage their roles really well. The one thing I hated though was how often I was going "why don't you turn on the frickin' lights?" when they went off to investigate a bump in the night, or that they slept with the lights out. I'd be sleeping with lights on full blast if any weirdness was freaking me out. I also wonder why no neighbors were hearing and calling the police when all the screaming was going on.
ETA: I didn't see the Blair Witch until it was on Showtime, but I watched in on a dark, stormy night while I was living in a wooded, rural region of Vermont. Despite the hype, I was scared enough that refused to go downstairs by myself after finishing watching it.

And I think that is what makes the movie scary that it isn't some old creepy house, it takes place in a home that millions have. That really impressed me. The house was so completely ordinary, almost a McHome. And there were a total of what, four actors in the entire movie? But the scenes at night were just BRRRRR! This was not the scariest movie I've ever seen, but it really captured that spooky feeling when you wake up at night and the house is completely dark and quiet, and you hear a noise you can't identify. Two silly notes: about halfway through the movie my sister and I wondered "Do these people have jobs?" (I know it was explained when they were interviewed by the psychic, but damn, they were always home putzing around.) Second, I am a straight woman, but I have to say Katie has awesome breasts. I was jealous at several points during the movie, haha.
