I read somewhere that strapless is cheaper for the designers and manufacturers. For myself, I recently bought a wedding dress that has a halter neckline from a bridal superstore I also think I am lacking the bridal gene, because my plan was to find a cute vintage cocktail dress on eBay, but my mom looked so disappointed. That said, the bulk of dresses available to try on on had simple straps or were strapless, but the shop has different "modesty" options--like adding a cap sleeve or other variations. For a hefty fee, of course. Hmm, why am I not surprised? The rack-obsessed fiance was sweet in that he clearly adored his bride-to-be, but really...they need to leave SOMETHING for the wedding night!

The other style I'm perplexed by is the strapless dresses that seem to have no lining at the top so top is fairly see through. It almost looks like lingerie. The bottom part of the dress is usually pretty poofy. The Pnina Tornai gown - I think it looks so trashy! What I really find weird is that they only get to try on three dresses. I guess that policy cuts down on the looky-loos, but still.

I haven't seen the show, but just a comment on the strapless trend.
I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and yes, the bride wore a strapless gown. She looked gorgeous and definitely had the body for it....but she had the worst posture and rounded shoulders. She was stooped all night. I was wondering if she felt it was going to slide off or something? Anyway, I got married in the early nineties. Poofy sleeves for the win!

I watch this show all the time, which is unusual for someone who has attended more funerals than weddings, with no plans to get wed either. I HATE the strapless gowns with a passion. They all look like they are wearing bedsheets and I agree that women with ample cleavage do not look good in them. Those ladies need a v-neck or a halter to distract the eye from the bust.
I always hate seeing the bride to be get into a dress, only to be shot down by friends and family. I never seems to be a case of "that doesn't suit you figure" some much as that is not how they see you as a bride. Did anyone see that episode with the bride with the miserable twin? Towards the end of the appointment she asks if she is done, because we (meaning she) has better things to do with her day. Apparently she was guilted into coming to the appointment by mum. She shot down every dress with some snide remark. Keisha never saw the likes of it.
That Pnina Tornai gown is so trashy, it is best relegated to a Guns and Roses video. Can you imagine seeing that in a church? Eww!

I love this because I live vicariously through them. I apparently wasn't born with the bride gene as well. Marriage #1 - I wore a nice dress. Mr. Gracie #1 wore a suit. Marriage #2 - I wore a nice dress. Mr. Gracie #2 wore a suit. Marriage #1 lasted 12 years. Marriage #2 has lasted nearly 13 and going strong. BTW....dress porn?? ;D It will forever be called that in the Gracie House.

YAY!! I love this show! Thanks for starting the thread. How about the episode a few weeks back with the girl with the hideous twin sister?

Heyalice, jinx!
This show is one of my guilty pleasures. Seeing people's reactions to certain dresses and trying to understand their real motivations for their opinions is so interesting. My favorite was the twin sister who came into the dressing room and announced that the bride should "hurry up we're getting bored and have things to do". She didn't even want to be there and told everyone. It was obvious she was jealous and unaware or didn't care how her sister felt. Her sister just wanted to share that day with her and I have a feeling if she hadn't invited her she'd never let her forget it.

I too was born without the bride gene, trying on fancy dresses for hours and hours sounds like my idea of hell actually. But I love this show. It makes me appreciate the relative sanity of my own family.

I watched this for the first time last Friday, but only because I wanted to see the Duggar episode. I ended sitting through several hours.
Back when I was considering a having a real wedding (I ended up eloping) I found a dress I liked in a magazine, I went with my best friend to a dress shop that had the dress, I tried it on, I said "yes, this is the one" and that was it. I can't imagine trying on dozens of dresses, or dealing with the family/friends/fiance drama some of those women go through or create for themselves. I also can't see spending thousands of dollars on a dress either. Guess that bride gene is missing in me too.

Dear Mom:
Thank you so much for selecting a simple, classic dress for your wedding to Daddy in 1960. Thank you as well for giving it to me to wear when I got married in 1987, and for finding the most wonderful and talented seamstress to help you change the dress from a '60s-era boatneck, cap-sleeved, bell-skirted ballgown to a totally '80s pouf-sleeved meringue covered in encrusted lace. I don't know what I was thinking, but thanks anyway.
Because of you, I never set foot in a bridal salon until my best friend got married years later, and from what I can tell, you saved me a lot of time, angst, and money. I only hope that when the time comes, I can find someone just as wonderful and talented to help me change the dress back to a simple, classic silhouette for the weddings of divaspawns 1 and 3.
Love, divasahm
