Oh, Toni Colette would be great in that role. I read the book long before the hype, which has annoyed me to no end and I completely understand why people would hate it after that. But without the hype, it was a decent story. The author does have a very engaging voice, self-indulgent, yes, but also intimate.
I say that as someone who turns her nose up to Harry Potter and Da Vinci Code books.

I liked the book, but I'm embarrassed about admitting it... I would've liked to see Cameron Diaz or Sandra Bullock in the role. Not a fan of JR.

I think JR is perfect for this role. Elizabeth Gilbert is a talented author and took what could have been totally obnoxious whinefest and turned into a pretty relateable and charming story. YMMV.
I think JR is exactly the type of self-absorbed person to play this role.
But, yeah, a Claire Danes might have been good b/c Julia ain't no 33.

I find it hard to have sympathy for Julia Roberts needing a break from her life by ditching regular sex with Billy Crudup and James Franco to upgrade to Javier Bardem. Boo-hoo, lady.
I think the guy she ends up with is supposed to be "older". They should have cast some hippie with a devastating accent in his late 50s or 60s with this leading lady. I don't know who. Stephen Dillane? Jean Reno? Jeremy Irons? I don't know.

*Sigh* Jean Reno. I'd be all over that movie, even if I have to sit through Julia Roberts.

I'm watching this movie on DVD and not really enjoying it. But Julia wears some good sweaters.
