I really liked the book. I read it at a time I was struggling through some emotionally tough times and changes, so it really spoke to me. However, I have read some really harsh reviews and I can understand where the book could have just the opposite affect on other people.
I knew going in, I was bound to have some disappointment as I do with pretty much any book that I have read that is made into a movie. But wow! To me, the screenplay was written by a person who hated the book. Then to add Julia on top of it, with her more bitter than sweet persona, just made it worse. I am not sure another actress could have saved it...though I wouldn't have minded seeing Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman in the role. Maybe they could have saved the character from seeming like such a self-centered cow.

Hated the book. She had a mid life crisis and the equivalent of her her red ferrari and 22 year old girlfriend was getting a book deal where she got paid to run around the world to different spiritual and cultural centers that on paper sounded like the ideal places that would "fix" her. The problem was she was so numb and insufferable she could have spent a year and each place and she'd still be the same. The movie wasn't as much of a suck fest that some said it was. The scenery saved a lot of it, but beyond wanting to smack Liz every time she opened her mouth (or maybe that was just Julia Roberts) I'm tired of skin and bones actresses trying to convince us that not being able to zip up size 2 jeans means that they are oh so fat from running around Italy eating delicious food.

Agreed, and will also say that I don't think Gilbert's eating-as-therapy section in Italy would have been as well received if she wasn't thin. If she was bigger all that eating would have repelled many readers, if she even got a deal for it at all.

I watched this recently and thought it was tremendously boring.
My favorite Italian vacation movie will always be Summertime with Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi.

I just never lose myself in Julia Roberts' movies. I am always aware that Julia is on the screen. She never "becomes" her characters.

Really. Has she ever been in a movie where she didn't do her wide mouth, head back "laugh?" Gah, I hate that! She looks like an empty Pez dispenser.
Well, this morning I started watching this about 5 minutes before Javier showed up. So I guess I timed that right! I enjoyed it. It was nice, and has been said, harmless.

I watched this a while back while I was in bed sick and my god, this shoved me over the hate edge with Julia. I can't believe how luminous and likable she used to be. And I think that there is a fine line to walk with this kind of story, and she can't pull it off without being sanctimonious. I used to love Billy Crudup like mad, and it was oddly satisfying seeing him get dumped after the whole Clare Danes thing. Yeah, I had a fever, so maybe that explains some of my reaction.

The movie is long and boring but does make me want to visit Italy and eat pizza.

This woman is tiresome. She seems absolutely exhausting.
