Are we counting new movies that premiere on TV as the movies? I'm going to:
The Trial of the Chicago 7. For what is essentially a courtroom procedural, I liked it. But I tend to really, really like Sorkin--his dialogue is just fantastic. Sasha Baron Cohen was particularly good as Abbie Hoffman and I always like seeing Michael Keaton. Very strong ending and so applicable to all the shit that's happening in this country today.

I want to watch Dylan O'Brien's Love and Monsters but it's not released in Canada yet. It's release date was Oct 16 but only for US viewers. I can't find out when it's going to be available to other countries. Grrr! Give me my Stiles! lol

Just watched Another 48 Hours, 1990, Eddie Murphy, Nick Nolte. It was free. It was ok, it was what we expected. Afterwards, my brother observed that it doesn't pass "that test" (the Bechdel test). No, no it doesn't. I would be more surprised if it did pass that test.

It seems right up my alley, I wish it was something I could see in the theater, that's the only way I can truly focus. In the small bits I saw, I was rather impressed with Eddie Redmayne's American accent and the way that haircut almost made him look manly when he usually has a spritely leprechaun/hobbit vibe.

We watched the newest Emma (via HBO) and really enjoyed it. It is so, so beautiful--every frame looks like a painting. I don't think Anya Taylor-Joy is quite as good in the role as Gwyneth Paltrow, but the newer castings of Mr. Knightley, her dad, and Mrs. Bates are all perfection. Clueless is obviously still the greatest Emma adaptation but this was very enjoyable.

Happiest Season , which while a enjoyable movie and probably groundbreaking queer-themed, did not so much succeed as a romance. I wanted the leads to break up. Too little actual romance, too much interpersonal conflict.Of course, {Spoiler}I realized the movie spent too much time establishing the family, but I really wanted Kristen Stewart’s character to go be with someone already self-accepting.

Yeah, it was fine, but I didn't love it. I found the main family less 'quirky' and more annoying than I'm sure I was meant to. Most interesting character for me was Aubrey Plaza's--wanted to see more of her.

Also in the 'new Christmas movie' vein--Jingle Jangle (on Netflix). I didn't realize it was a musical so the first song kind of took me by surprise, but the movie is visually DELIGHTFUL and all of the performances are extremely charming. It is aimed at kids for sure but we enjoyed it very much.

Small question here, but how TF is HBO Max planning to be a major platform for release of new movies when 80-90% of the movies I have downloaded through the app won't even play? I have a brand new Samsung tablet so I'm not working with outdated or off-brand hardware. I investigated and this is an extremely common problem that existed with HBO Plus and now with Max and is not being fixed. They seriously need to get their technical shit together and it does not seem to be their priority at all.
