Saw Spider-Man: No Way Home yesterday and loved it! Especially Ned’s Lola! Also, saw Spider-Man: No Way Home yesterday and loved it! I saw it with a very enthusiastic crowd and it heightened the experience. Lots of cheering and clapping but it never got to the point of being annoying.

Just got back from Spider-Man and wow. Just, wow. Also had some cheers in the theater.

We also just got back from it! Really enjoyed it (although no cheers in my theater, I guess we are unenthused up here). Andrew Garfield was great as was, um, everyone else--I haven't watched any trailers so I'm not sure what's a spoiler and trying to err on the side of caution! I also thought the emotional moments hit more than really any other Marvel movie that I've seen.

We saw it yesterday too. The crowd reactions were very enthusiastic applause at all the right moments. Tom Holland is hands down my favorite Spiderman. By the end of the film I just wanted to hug him.

Husband and I went to see The Matrix: Resurrections on Christmas Eve. I'd say it's worth seeing, there's definitely tons of fan service and a lot of callbacks (especially to the first movie) but it's done in a very meta, almost tongue-in-cheek way. I go back and forth on Jonathan Groff as the new Smith. His portrayal was very goofy, it didn't have the menacing nature to it that Hugo Weaving's did, and Smith is basically a good guy in this, which is...an odd choice.
Carrie Ann Moss has barely aged. I like the new real world characters, the new city in the real world, and how they handled the evolution of the conflict between humans and machines. There were some inclusions that didn't need to be there -- the Merovingian turning up was dumb, he served absolutely no purpose other than to fill time and make the audience laugh. And why was Christina Ricci in the movie for like, five seconds?

Being the Ricardos: The movie itself I'd only give a B/B-, but I thought Nicole Kidman was excellent in it. She sounds just like Lucy and I did like that the plot of the film focuses on one particular week on the set of "I Love Lucy." Wasn't very impressed with Javier Bardem as Desi.
Don't Look Up: A-/B+ I really liked this. I thought Leo and Jennifer Lawrence were hilarious and the supporting cast is so strong. I can't stand Jonah Hill, but he plays a Don Jr.-esque character, so I at least felt good at hating him.
Licorice Pizza: A-/B+ I love Paul Thomas Anderson movies and his love of the San Fernando Valley. Plus, it's set in the '70's, which I have such a fondness for.

I'm not sure anymore what qualifies as a rental and what qualifies as "seeing at the movies" but I streamed a lot over the Christmas holiday.
Being the Ricardos: Really disappointed in this one. I have always been very interested in the Lucille/Desi story, and this movie got so many things wrong factually. But most of all, it made a really dramatic story way LESS dramatic. Usually movies do the opposite. It was really sanitized, and rather dull. I liked Javier Bardem as Desi. Nicole Kidman was ok as Lucille, and I'm glad she didn't go over-the-top with an impression, but she was still far too Nicole Kidman-ish for my liking. (I recently saw Bombshell for the first time, and while Charlize Theron was making me do double-takes with how good her Megyn Kelly was, Nicole was irritating the crap out of me by being 100% Nicole Kidman at all times, doing her trademark whisper voice and her lazy American accent which she needs to go back and do some major work on. She's kind of on my shit list right now.)
Don't Look Up: I got a kick out of it. This was the perfect thing to watch on Christmas Day when things were chaotic and dogs were barking and people were drifting in and out of the room. I don't understand all the people who are hating this movie so passionately. Perhaps they were expecting something different? It's a silly comedy, and it was fun. I was even ok with Cate Blanchett being a banquet-sized ham, as usual.
Passing: So boring. I was looking forward to this because I read the book recently, and the book is so much better.

I also saw Being the Ricardos, and largely enjoyed. I thought Nicole Kidman did a great voice and mannerisms for Lucy. But…and it’s a big but, are we all just pretending that she can move her face? It’s completely frozen. She acted with her body, voice, and eyes. She can’t move her facial muscles. Her cheeks on the photoshopped movie poster have more texture than in reality. It made me wonder what an actress with facial movements might have done. She’s also 15 years older than Lucy was at latest in this movie. Just absolutely bizarre casting. Javier Bardem was fabulous as Desi. The story itself, not as didactic as Aaron Sorkin can be. So largely enjoyable with some howling questions.

This is just an example of 'someone else would have been a better casting choice, but I wanted it so there!'
