Barbie was charming and fine, but...IDK, maybe my expectations were too high. Some parts just didn't hit for me. Really liked America and Michael Cera was hilarious as poor, forgotten Allan.
Oppenheimer was pretty amazing. There's a few scenes that were just astounding and the performances were great throughout. Christopher Nolan sure knows how to do 'epic' movies.

I really enjoyed Barbie and like it's unabashedly feminist bent. But it wasn't the Best Movie Ever. The look of Barbie Land was amazing, and the homage to Barbie lore was impressive.

I agree, Batmom. I see movies so seldomly that when I do, I've usually read tons of great reviews and I end up feeling disappointed. Even though I had read a lot about this one, I was still pleasantly surprised and honestly wouldn't mind seeing it again in the theater. It's such a spectacle--it was hard to take in everything. I think Tom and Lorenzo did a great job summing up how I/we feel about the movie (really good but not perfect). But this is the point I keep coming back to as I think back on it:

I thought you were talking about Oppenheimer. The quote fits for everything I’ve heard about it as well….except the Barbie part at the end.

I saw Oppenheimer over the weekend. It's very long and very, very loud. It also can be a bit confusing as it jumps around in time a lot, and I thought some of the nudity was unnecessary. It almost felt a bit Game of Thrones-y with "sexposition." The last hour though was perfection, going from the Trinity test to the aftermath of dropping the bomb on Hiroshima and Oppenheimer's feelings of doubt and self-reflection. I also really liked that the film showed his camaraderie with Einstein.
Also -- I'm not kidding when I say this movie is LOUD.

Saw Barbie with my mom today and was pleasantly surprised. Low expectations are the key to satisfaction in life.
It was a great light movie, with good jokes, beautiful visuals and wonderful dance and “battle” sequences.
ETA: I saw no advertising or trailers for the movie, so I haven’t already been exposed to the best jokes. I knew next to nothing going in.

Can’t wait!

I really liked the Barbie movie, but it was way more cartoonish than I was expecting. I know that sounds crazy because it's a movie about dolls going to the real world, but the "real world" in the movie is not really based in reality (Mattel headquarters and executives in particular). Magical realism, maybe? All of your disbelief must be left at the door and just enjoy the fun ride, the biting social commentary, and the sentimentality. I will be rewatching this movie obsessively when it's on streaming because I know I missed a ton of details. The sets in Barbie World must be a lock for an Oscar in production design.

This is how I felt--thanks for articulating! The more I think about the social commentary after, the more I appreciate it, but I was not anticipating the cartoon aspect (or not enough) when I saw it. I for sure what to re-watch, though (and that Billie Eilish song is an earworm).

I saw a movie at our local art house theater-Daliland. “In 1974 a young gallery assistant is drawn into the wild, never-ending party that is artist Salvador Dalí's life in New York City. As he helps the aging genius prepare for an important show, he discovers not everything is as it seems.” Ben Kingsley is Salvador Dali.
While I loved Barbie and am looking forward to Oppenheimer, it was nice to see a nice, quiet movie for a change. And if I can support our little theater, that’s a plus too. We were the first ones there, so they made the popcorn. Such a difference when it’s freshly popped! There were about 10 of us there on a Monday night, so that was great too. And you get a choice of movie theater seat, couch, comfy chair, or barstools by a bar to sit!
