Oh, I want to see Persepolis plus the Orphanage.
Just saw Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Wow, dark! This was almost as gruesome as Sweeney Todd, in its own way. I have no idea why, maybe just based on the title, I thought it would be darkly humorous. My bad. Hoffman played a really believable douchebag, Hawke, an equally believable wimp. I'm not sure why Tomei was in this movie...her character was all over the place, not really well articulated. Ah well.

Yeah, I LOATHED Marisa Tomei in that movie--she was the only weak link in what I thought was an incredible film. At times I thought she even lapsed into bad high school drama acting. I think the only reason she was in that movie was to show that she still has a good body at her age--because, seriously, she was naked throughout the whole thing. It was totally gratuitous.

I saw The Kite Runner for a discussion group. Probably not a movie I would have gone to see on my own, but it turned out to be really good. It's about a father and son from Afghanistan and it covers the period from just before the Soviet invasion to the late 90s/00 when the Taliban had taken over. It's based on a bestselling novel that's out right now.

It was 13 below zero here yesterday. I think everyone in the whole state went to the movies, because I thought I was the only person in the world who wanted to see The Water Horse, but the theater was almost full. I loved it, but I'm a sucker for Loch Ness Monster lore and gorgeous scenery. I've heard no one discuss this movie anywhere, which is a shame, because parents wanting to entertain their kids would be a lot better off at this movie than Alvin and the Chipmunks. (I wrote that as "chimpunks" the first time, and somehow, I like that better.)

Just saw 27 Dresses last night. I howled with laughter at certain parts - although that may have more to do with the 7 hideous bridesmaid dresses in my closet. Katherine Heigl is great in it, and I wanted to take James Marsden home with me. I'm buying this one when it comes out. It's my new Bridget Jones's Diary.

There Will Be Blood. Day-Lewis and his son were captivating. I thought the preacher dynamic would be different but it was still ok. The opening scenes were so intense, I left the theater pretty anxious without realizing it. The musical score alone spiked my blood pressure. I think I was expecting D-L to hit his fake eagle eye at some point.
ETA: clementine74, I'm pretty sure the last positive thing I thought about Tomei in that movie was that she had an awesome body. And I think she's a decent actress just...not in that instance.

Rambo .
And now I've seen enough limbs getting blown off to last me quite some time.

I heard Rambo was one of the most violent movies to come out in a loooong time.

It really is. Lots of people getting blown into bits, huge holes shot out of them, losing limbs, etc. Very gross. I prefer my action movies have things rather than people blowing up.

I just saw The Diving Bell and The Butterfly. Loved it. Of all the movies that I have seen that came out in 2007 - and I saw a lot this was the best. It is too bad that the Academy's rules are so fucked up it wasn't eligible for Best Foreign pick, probably would have won.
