You're nicer than I am, Spin -- I'd have gone for the manager at that point. I was tempted, but we didn't have a lot of time to hunt them down (it's a VERY big drive-in with 3 screens) and we had the baby with us, too. But if I come across this again, I may have no choice. People get so testy with the California heat/sun once it starts to go down in the evening, I guess. *shrug*

All of these bad movie manners stories seem to validate our usual approach to theatre movie-watching. We rarely go to new-release movies in prime viewing time. We'll usually wait until a movie's been in the theatres for a couple of weeks and then go to the first showing on Sunday morning (people here don't like to get up early on Sundays)and ask for a seat in the two-seater rows at the side. Once the movie has started, there's always the opportunity to suss out where empty seats are and move centre-screen if we want, but most of the time we just stay where we are.
On the rare occasions when we we really, really want to see something on the big screen as soon as it's out, then we pony up the extra cash for exclusive viewing at a 50-seat premium cinema with armchair seats in pods of two and minions to bring us our food. It's an expensive time out but we only do it a couple of times a year, if that. If I'm going to pay money to see a movie in a theatre, then I want to enjoy the viewing experience, even if the movie lets me down.

We have something similar, but without the minions. I want minions to bring me things during a movie.
I found myself with a break in the middle of the workday a couple of weeks ago and I saw Iron Man 3 at noon on a Wednesday. Definitely the way to go.

I can't decide if your neighbors in a packed IMAX 3D showing of Man of Steel murmuring to each other is better or worse than stage whispers or actual conversation. It's that low-level annoying conversation that you can't quite hear, but still loud enough to be heard over the explosions and overscoring. I really do know better than to see blockbusters on opening weekend.

I find movies too loud in general, so I wear foam ear plugs, and this filters out all the low-level murmuring while keeping all the sound of the film intact and at a more tolerable level. Most recently, Mr Chonies was complaining about the murmuring of the people in front of us at This Is The End, and I didn't even realize they were talking.

I've been wearing earplugs to the movies for years thanks to my tinnitus, and it really does block out a fair amount of audience noise.

I love the minion theaters. We have a Cinebarre which is 21 and over, with full seat service. It's sweet and doesn't cost much more than the regular theater.
This weekend I was at at the cheap $3 cinema and the whole row in front of me and my friend was empty until this family showed up. The father kept asking my friend if anyone in his group would obscure her view before they sat down, but then he proceeded to sit his fat head right in front of me like I was invisible or didn't warrant the courtesy my friend was getting. We ended up shifting our seats so his big fat head wasn't in my way. Then, in an otherwise empty row, some guy decides to sit right next to me. Normally I wouldn't care, but the theater had plenty of other seats so he was unnecessarily close, and he ended up eating noisy candy and nachos through the whole movie. If my drink hadn't cost more than the price of my ticket it would have found its way into his lap.
