I KNOW! Biggest snub of the year as far as I'm concerned. That and RBG are probably the two documentaries that the most people actually saw last year, to not nominate it is a freaking travesty. I get that the documentary and foreign language branches vote based on the entire field of eligible films and not just on the 1 or 2 that happened to be popular. And they are looking for qualities beyond enjoyability. BUT...When you have a documentary that breaks through to the mainstream and means a lot to people, doesn't that count for something? Give people something to root for when they watch the telecast and maybe they will actually care. Three Identical Strangers also got snubbed, and while it wasn't as big as RBG or Won't You Be My Neighbor? it got a ton of press and good word of mouth. When I saw it I thought for sure it'd at least get nominated. I mean really, how many documentaries have people giving spoiler warnings for them? And once again, it's an all-male director slate. This is pretty egregious IMO for Can You Ever Forgive Me? which has two acting nominations and an adapted screenplay nomination but yet apparently didn't merit anything for directing.

I was also surprised that 3 Identical Strangers didn’t get a Documentary nod.

I was really surprised to read this is apparently Spike Lee's first Best Director nomination? I completely assumed he'd been nominated back in the '90s.

Spike Lee got an honorary Oscar in 2015, but this is his first best director nomination.
I am rooting for Hannah Beachler and Ruth E. Carter for Production Design and Costume Design, respectively, for Black Panther.
Meryl Streep has been nominated seven times in the last 10 years (and won once), but nothing this year. I guess she didn't have a big dramatic movie in 2018, all I can remember is her cameo in MPR and Mamma Mia 2.

The Academy tends to dump auteurs (Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, PT Anderson, Spike Jonze) into the screenplay category so they can free up the Best Director category for more mainstream directors.

I watched the nomination announcements but....yeah, I did not really follow award season this year as closely as usually, because I've never heard about a good number of these movies...
I see upset Timmy Chalamet fans because he was snubbed? The guy is what, 21? I would like to talk to his fans about waiting decades before your favorite actor wins anything. Now that was agony. Ever since Leo has his Oscar, I can sleep again (please don't come at me, I know the man's life is a mess).
Oh, and there are no female directors, editors, composers, cinematographers ? Not to mention the all-male tech noms. Hollywood, grow up.

I love Richard E Grant anyway but his reaction to his nomination is just so joyful Isn't he the sweetest? I know he's not going to win but he seems so happy to be there for everything during awards season. I love his joy and enthusiasm and his interactions with other nominees. How do some British actors seemingly get nominated every other year, but this is Grant's first nom ever? How is it possible that Alan Rickman died without an Oscar nom to his name?

Yeah honestly, one of the reasons I was never too broken up about Leonardo DiCaprio is that at least he was getting nominated! Alfred Molina's another one I wish would get some recognition. Dude has been stealing movies since the 80s. (I hope I'm not about to call down the CPMCoG curse and find out he's a huge jerk.)
