Speaking of Scorcese, I'm about two-thirds of the way thru The IrishmanI think it says it all about The Irishman that everyone says, "I'm a half hour into it" or "I have another hours to go, but..." Everybody I know who started the movie (nobody I know has finished it) said it was a chore and not good. I think it's a terrible harbinger of the upcoming awards season that this movie is the frontrunner. I, as a woman, am boycotting this Scorsese sausage fest!

Oh, I'm definitely going to finish it--I like it well enough for that. But it's just...perfectly fine, nothing special. I do think the brouhaha about Anna Paquin's character wouldn't be an issue if the part was being played by an unknown actress. However, the thrust of the argument really just illustrates an overall Scorcese issue, that being he just does not write for women in any meaningful way in any of his movies.

It took us 3 consecutive evenings to get through The Irishman. I feel the same way, it was underwhelming. I was thrilled to see Joe Pesci back though, and I thought he gave the best performance in the movie, but of course all of the performances were good, it was just a slog to get through. I think the ending of the film was very good, though, and it complemented his two other mob classics, Goodfellas and Casino.
I know Scorsese would never lower himself to do episodic television (it's not CINEMA!) but this may have worked as a limited series.
Within the film, Anna Paquin's character makes complete sense. She's just this silent observer of all this horror. When she finally speaks, it does have a big impact.
It should be said over and over and over that Scorsese would not be as praised as he is without Thelma Schoonmaker, his editor. She literally makes his movies for him, LOL, by piecing the shots together in a certain way. And it doesn't bother me that his focus has mainly been on male characters, masculinity, and crime and violence in that context. I just wish female filmmakers could be given the opportunities to create their own bodies of work that bring them the prestige that Scorsese has built over a 40+ year career.

I could not agree with you more about Thelma Schoonmaker, she’s the real unsung hero of Scorsese’s filmography. And along those lines, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the movies Quentin Tarantino has made since his editor Sally Menke died have been (in my opinion anyway) overly long and tending towards self indulgence.

Finished The Irishman and, yeah, I'm still not understanding the huge love for it. I agree it would've been more compelling as a limited series. That DeNiro is almost assured an Oscar nom is irritating.

Bafta nominations list. And yes, the racism trend continues, Bafta members really couldn't find a single actor or actress of color to nominate. Not one. They had to nominate both ScarJo and Margot Robbie twice because apparently there weren't enough other white actresses they could nominate to keep non-white actresses out of their noms. Again, I'm at a loss of words here. What IS going on? And it's not as if 2019 was the worst year when it came to Hollywood approved diversity. I think awards academies's damn JOB should be to find those performances.

I am so underwhelmed by this year's award season, other than Parasite.

The nominations were just announced...once again no women were nominated for directing.
And Rocketman got almost completely shut out, all they got was Best Original Song. Taron Egerton should’ve gotten in there. As should the costume people.
What surprised me that I did like was Knives Out getting a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Rian Johnson. I didn’t think it would get anything.

I think it's time to just give up on the Oscars.
Has anyone here seen Jojo Rabbit? I have zero interest in seeing it. I don't do funny Hitler*, sorry.
*Except if it includes Charlie Chaplin

I didn’t think it would get anything. These were really bad this year, imo, more than normal. Maybe it's because of the shortened awards season? I think all the movies that were nominated for Best Picture were in the green this year on MC, except for maybe Joker which was still really close to it, so that was a nice change from last year where Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice were in the red, and Green Book was either barely fresh or mixed. However, I hate how 4 films all got nominations in the double digits, (Joker -11, The Irishman - 10, 1917 - 10, OUATIH - 10) which is something that's never happened before, and really shouldn't because 4 films especially films where women get to do very little or in some cases nothing at all, shouldn't get that many nominations even if they are fair to great films. It's just ridiculous. Not to mention the lack of diversity. They were so close to being #OscarsSoWhite again this year if it weren't for the nomination for Cynthia Erivo. I liked Kathy Bates's performance, but it should have been Jennifer Lopez instead, or even Scarlett Johansson wasn't deserving of two nominations imo, so Lopez should have gotten in over her too. On top of the serious problems, for me the nominations just didn't offer any fun surprises like last year with Roma getting its two lead actresses in. Everything was so predictable and rote, and generally there's a few surprises that make them different from the other televised awards. Apparently not this year though where the 4 acting winners are just going to win everything as they did in 2017, and it seems like Director will be Sam Mendes again over Martin Scorsese who will still only have one Best Director Oscar. Best Picture might be a tossup, but maybe 1917 which didn't need an Editing nomination because its similar to Birdman because Once Upon a Time in Hollywood did miss Editing despite the fact that it shouldn't have given how it's shot, and Parasite is at a disadvantage because voters will vote for Best International Feature Film too, and I'm not sure if Hollywood will award a film Best Picture and Best International Feature Film. I won't even entertain the idea of Joker winning. The Irishman hit everything, but it hasn't been able to win anything big and likely won't win PGA, DGA, or SAG.
