I think Enchanted is too light hearted for an oscar nom. The fact that Atonement is on a lot of critics lists and it perfect oscar bait makes me think the movie is pretty likely to be nominated and I think out of all the actors in the movie Keira has the best shot of getting a nom.
I wouldn't mind Angie being nominated but I think that the movie being out so long ago may work against it in terms of it not being fresh in their minds.
I've heard great things about Cotillard but the oscars can sometimes be funny about overlooking foreign language performances.
I loved Juno and would love to see Ellen Page get a nom but the quirky nature of the movie make me think the older oscar voters just may not get her performance.

I'm little embarrassed to say but I would love to see Pop! Goes My Heart from Music and Lyrics be nominated for best original song.

I think Enchanted is too light hearted for an oscar nom. The fact that Atonement is on a lot of critics lists and it perfect oscar bait makes me think the movie is pretty likely to be nominated and I think out of all the actors in the movie Keira has the best shot of getting a nom. Yes, it seems like perfect Oscar bait, so if the movie is in, she's in. I think McAvoy might have a good chance now too in the newcomer spot, and if they really love Atonement, they might want to boost its total nomination count. I don't see that happening with No Country for Old Men because unfortunately Tommy Lee Jones has another lead project that he's splitting votes with, and then he and Josh Brolin are splitting votes too. So it will probably be Depp, Day-Lewis, Clooney, and two other open spots. I think they'll nominate Casey Affleck for supporting even if he's not techically supporting for the JJ movie or for Gone, Baby, Gone, and then there will be two spots everyone else is fighting for. I was worried about that too, but she's picked up all the precursors so far, and luckily for her the lead dramatic female roles that came out later, which were suppose to have all the buzz didn't pan out as expected. In fact, I don't remember a leading drama category that was so weak. I think Christie easily wins because I think everyone is trying to set up a Christie vs. Cotillard Oscar race with Knightley perhaps being the spoiler. Yes, it it's like Little Miss Sunshine, then I think she's in. If it doesn't get a Best Picture nomination though, then she probably won't get in because of of it being comedy, her age, and her newcomer status working against her. In that case, she would be very similar to Evan Rachel Wood in Thirteen. Of course, that wasn't a comedy, but she picked up all the precursors like Ellen Page has so far, and most people were predicting her to be nominated based on those precursors since it's very rare for someone to not be nominated if they pick up a BFCA nod, a GG nod, and a SAG nod. I guess her age worked against her and the film itself which wouldn't appeal to many older voters, I imagine. So I guess it's possible that maybe a leftfield person who most people thought was out could take her place like Samantha Morton did in Wood's year. Also fortunately, for Page though, I can't recall a leading child actress that has tons of support behind her like Keisha Castle-Hughes did, so she shouldn't have to worry about perhaps being overlooked in favor of someone younger. (I guess technically Page hasn't got a SAG nod yet, but I think that she will get one.)

I thought the year Reese won was really weak in both drama and comedy. I like Reese but I thought she got really lucky that year.

Oh my yes! That song was great - a spot on 80s parody that was surprisingly awesome and catchy. I would also LOVE to see Hugh Grant shake his thang while performing it at the Oscars. Or maybe they could just show that glorious video.
In other Oscar musings... I do hope that James McAvoy isn't the weak link in the Oscar top five for Best Actor. He was so excellent in Atonement and was really (if understandably) overlooked for his excellent supportive work in The Last King of Scotland. I think his performance is a mix of good ol' fashioned charisma and subtle character work that really help elevate the film. It is largely because of him that Atonement is as emotionally resonant as it is (imo - but I lurve him!).
ETA: I think Amy Adams and Ellen Page are probably duking it out for a Best Actress nomination. Page probably has the edge because Juno is absolutely considered to be the better film and has been on the Awards-radar for ages, but Adams gives a full-on star-making performance that truly elevates a mediocre film. This doesn't happen all too often these days, but Hollywood sometimes likes to crown a new "America's Sweetheart" with a nomination (I would say the most recent of these is probably Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones's Diary although Keira's nomiation for Pride and Prejudice might also count) and I think that Amy definitely fits that slot with her performance in Enchanted.

You know, I saw Junebug the other day and I realized that Amy Adams plays the exact same type of character in nearly every movie I've seen her in - Catch Me if You Can, Junebug, Enchanted - all wide eyed, innocent, naive characters who have to cry and be scared. I really don't think her work in Enchanted is Oscar worthy. I think with Juno gaining steam, Page might get that last slot over Adams.

My gut tells me that Johnny Depp will win the Best Actor category next year. George Clooney?? Already won one. Ditto for pretty much every other contender for Best Actor. Unfortunately, I don't think Viggo will get a nod, although I think he should.
This year just seems really bad for acting in general. Is it just me or does it seem as though no one performance has really stood out.
Back to Johnny he has been on a resurgence since the first Pirates came out, and I just have a feeling that many people think he is due won, not necessarily for one performance but for his entire body of work.

Yeah I think Viggo may got overlooked as Promises hasn't received a lot of attention from the critics awards to date - with the exception of the globes.
I don't know if the performances have been "bad" but there doesn't seem to be any sure bets this year which makes it more interesting to me - in the past few years there have been very few surprises at the award shows. So a wide open field brings a little excitement to the races.
Johnny winning would be fabulous. I think he'll win the globe for comedy/musical for sure.

And how funny is it to actually have three out of five films nominated in the Best Comedy/Musical to actually be musicals? It's like it's 1945 all over again!
