I hope Chiwetel Eijofor wins Best Actor because I thought his performance was better than Matthew McConaughey's. However I'm really not charmed by the idea of a "slavery vs. AIDS" sequel to the "racism vs. homophobia" hullabaloo of 2005. Oh, you know there's a chart somewhere for this. On the one hand, assuming there's no Holocaust movie this year, the movie about black people suffering nobly gets the Oscar. Advantage Ejiofor. But if an actor gains or loses a bunch of weight for a role, then he gets the Oscar. Point, McConnaughey. They're both based on true stories, so that can't even be the tiebreaker. Meanwhile Leonardo DiCaprio is somewhere, wondering how many Serious Important Message movies he has to do before he gets the statue he wants so very very badly.

Leo could very well win this year; he and McConaughey won't compete head-to-head until Oscar night. BAFTA snubbed Matt M while Leo did get nominated, though Chiwetel is a likely Best Actor winner there. Oscar voting hasn't started yet and I've already seen commentary that Matt shouldn't get get the Oscar for resurrecting his career recently, when Leo never went the "crappy romcom" route in the first place, and Chiwetel also has a more respectable resume. Of course, it should just be about this year's performance, but it's the Oscars, so good luck with that...

Meanwhile Leonardo DiCaprio is somewhere, wondering how many Serious Important Message movies he has to do before he gets the statue he wants so very very badly. I think that he's just had the unfortunate luck of being nominated when his performance is not the best in the nominated category. Tommy Lee Jones and Ralph Fiennes were the front runners when Leo was nominated for Gilbert Grape. When Leo was in the Aviator, that season was all about Jamie Foxx and Don Cheadle, and with Blood Diamond it was Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland. This year its all about Chiwetel and Matthew. Yes, he won the Golden Globe for Wolf of Wall Street, but has he won Best Actor anywhere else this season? For the record, I will be very sad if 12 Years a Slave doesn't do well at the Oscars. Yes, the nominations are great and hopefully this will get more people to see it, but it really should win the major categories in which it is nominated.

Studio System News has 12 Years as a clear favorite for Best Picture, Cauron as the favorite for Best Director, and surprisingly enough they have Chiwetel Ejiofor as a slight favorite for best actor. Him and MM are running neck and neck but CE has the better odds. Lupita is favored to win Best Supporting actress....so we shall see!

Wow, that's crazy. Well now I don't care who wins because I like all the songs.

It has been YEARS since I have seen all the best picture nominees before Oscar night. I am determined this year. Since its snowy and blizzard-y here in Boston I am stuck in the house. Four down, five to go. Here is my thought process. American Hustle: Eh. Kind of losing my interest here halfway through. But Amy Adams is amazing and wouldn't upset me if she won. Christian Bale is fan-fucking tastic and NEEDS to win. Dallas Buyers Club: Christian who?? Matthew is owning this role. Just beyond amazing. He NEEDS to win. And Jared has a lock on his win. Wolf of Wall Street: Long...but its a typical Marty movie which I love. Leo kicked ass and NEEDS to win. I finally get why Jonah was nominated. Her: Why the FUCK was Joaquin NOT nominated? ? He is killing me!!!! This NEEDS to be rectified!!! Not sure if my santity will hold up for the final 5 films.

If Leonardo wins, my head will explode. His performance was like a 0.3 Gordon Gekko.

Best Picture at the BAFTA is 12 Years a Slave. I didn't think that was going to happen because best director went to Gravity.
