It looks like 12 Years A Slave is getting all the momentum, and no one's really talking about Gravity any more. Hollywood seems to really want to reward McCaonaughey, so I'm not sure who will win Best Actor, but I bet 12 Years A Slave wins all the other big awards it's nominated for. Even supporting actor. Usually a gender-bending role is a lock, but not this time.

I'm happy to see that Barkhad Abdi won. He was the best part of Captain Phillips by far, so I'm glad he got something for it because I doubt he'll get the Oscar.

I guess it's Jennifer Lawrence's to lose at this point.
Go 12YAS for best picture!

With the long break in between the Golden Globes/SAGs etc. and the Olympics going on, I forgot we haven't had the Oscars yet!

Entertainment Weekly came out with their predictions -
Picture: Gravity (12YAS a close second) Director: Cuaron Lead Actor: McConaughey Supporting Actor: Leto Lead Actress: Blanchett, duh. Supporting Actress: Nyong'o (Lawrence a close second). Original Screenplay: Her Adapted Screenplay: 12YAS
I don't know. I think, in general, Gravity is the movie that everyone assumed would win, since everything about it is so Oscar-y. But 12YAS is the movie that captured people's attention. Sometimes the expected movie is the winning movie (The King's Speech) because nothing comes along that really captures the public's heart, the way 12YAS did. Gravity gets all the technical awards, and probably Director since Cuaron's been around forever, and McQueen is just breaking into Hollywood. And except for Michel Hazanavicius and Tom Hopper (and that was a really weak, "oh fine, if we have to" year) all the winners in the past 30 years have been famous known quantities.

I will be disappointed if Gravity wins best picture. It's technically beautiful but the story left much to be desired.

Time for everyone's final predictions. The Independent Spirit Awards will rainily take place in Santa Monica this afternoon, but it is supposed to be clear tomorrow for Oscar. It simply does NOT rain on Movie Stars!!! It just isn't done!!!
My guesses:
Original Screenplay: American Hustle Adapted Screenplay: 12 Years a Slave Supporting Actor: Jared Leto Dallas Buyers Club (I really have no idea why everyone thinks this was such a great performance, outside his male drag scene with the father.) Fassbender should be winning this. Supporting Actress: Lupita Nyongo 12 Years a Slave Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey Dallas Buyers Club Best Actress: Cate Blanchett Blue Jasmine Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron Gravity Picture: 12 Years a Slave
I'm going with the frontrunners, but someone always surprises. I'm also hoping Leo gets it for The Wolf of Wall Street. He went for it with that performance.

Who I think will win:
Original Screenplay: Her Adapted Screenplay: 12 Years a Slave Supporting Actor: Jared Leto Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey Best Actress: Cate Blanchett Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron Picture: 12 Years a Slave
I want Lupita Nyong'o to win so badly, but Lawrence had way too much momentum going into the final voting. I would also rather anyone other than Cate Blanchett won (though my preference leans to Sandra Bullock) but I don't see that happening. I do agree that Michael Fassbender should be winning and not Leto, though I do think he was good in DBC.

I still can't believe that McConaughey and Leto are going to be Oscar winners on Sunday night. I haven't seen their film yet so this is not a comment on their performances. It just feels strange. ;-)
Predictions: Best Picture: 12 Years A Slave Best Director: Cuaron Best Actress: Blanchett Best Actor: Leo (come on, you know I can't name anyone else even though he's going to lose) Supporting Actress: JLaw Supporting Actor: Jordan Catalano

I really hope that JLaw doesn't win. I hated American Hustle and I thought her performance was just like her performance in SLP, just louder. Of course I am biased, because I don't think she should have won for SLP either. I still think her performance was in Winters Bone. Argh.
Here are my final predictions, just the big six:
BP: 12YAS BD: Cuaron Actor: McM Actress: Blanchett Supporting Actress: Lupita Supporting Actor: Catalano, LOL.
Although I'm still annoyed, because I feel that in my opinion 12YAS is still getting hosed because the movie was "too difficult" for some people to watch, and people still don't want to deal with the awful history of slavery in America and past and current race issues. I honestly think that Ejiofor and Fassbender should have been winning all the awards for Actor and Supporting Actress. And the race between Lupita and JLaw shouldn't have been a race to begin with.
