Apparently Vanity Fair has decided to cancel their big oscar bash. Even if the strike is resolved (which hopefully will be the case) they think that it wouldn't be appropriate this year.

The strike is over - the show is on - go, Diablo!

No VF party, though! My parents are devastated! I'm working so much this week that I don't even get to go to any of the fun swag suites. No random free jeans and gourmet dog biscuits for me!

I already mentioned that the Weinstein Company had released a free DVD inside Variety with only Cate Blanchett's performance on it, but it seems they're getting even more desperate by releasing the parts with her in it for free online, Harvey Weinstein's Desperation Kicking into High Gear. I don't think it will help much. I know that Best Supporting Actress seems wide open right now except perhaps for Ronan's chances, but for me Amy Ryan and Cate Blanchett are slowly fading out of the race too. Ryan because she didn't gain any momentum based on the critics' sweep, and Blanchett because she just won in this same category a few years ago. Plus, even if she would have gained any votes in the few ballots that are still out there, if I were those voters, I would be tempted to vote for anything but Blanchett based on these cheap tricks that Weinstein is using.

Yeah, if the Academy gives Bardem or Affleck the award they will want to honour a veteran in the supporting actress category so I guess at the moment Ruby Dee's chances at winning look pretty good. The Weinsteins are like TomKat at times, they just don't know when it's enough. As if Blanchett needs tricks like that. For the lead categories I'm still sticking with DDL and Julie Christie. Cotillard winning would be amazing but as we all know surprises are so rare these days. ETA: via awardsdaily.com, some details about the ceremony and the list of this year's presenters: Erm, Miley Whatsherface is going to be presenter at the Oscars. Huh. I'm looking forward to seeing James McAvoy and Katherine Heigl. ETA2 ( ): TBH I like seeing new faces at the Oscars but this year's line-up seems a tad bit strange considering that it's the Oscar's 80th anniversary. And I see that fucking John Travolta is again a presenter. I would like to know how many times in a row he's been invited now . I could also do without seeing Patrick Dempsey's smug face. There's a reason he had been shut out of Hollywood for decades and Enchanted being a hit was not because of him (IMHO). Though I'm sure he thinks that. Heigl being there makes total sense, in a way she's Hollywood's top leading lady at the moment so I guess she's not as much out of place as Miley Cyrus and Jessica Alba.

I'm pretty sure Miley Cyrus will only be there because the Oscars are on ABC, which is owned by Disney. If it was on any other network she wouldn't have had any chance in hell at getting invited.

Jess Alba already was a presenter at the technical awards - so she's not actually presenting on the big night.
Yeah the Miley Cirus inclusion is odd but I figured Disney wanted the publicity.
I'm just thrilled that neither Tom or Katie are going to be presenters. I guess asking Nicole to present who has actually won an oscar kinda nixes asking her ex and his zombie bride.
Dwayne Johnson. Isn't that the Rock?
Overall the presenter list seems a bit low rent - maybe because the strike situation only just got resolved they were scrambling to fill the spots. Plus since the IRS clamped down on the $100k+ gift bag I guess some of the allure of presenting is gone.

The tech awards host also shows up at the main ceremony to recap the earlier event so we'll be seeing Alba. They always get a "hottie" to host it.

No VF party, though! My parents are devastated! I am, too--I always like seeing the photos of every letter of the alphabet celebrity take their place on the big VF to get their pic taken. Question: Are there any big parties still scheduled post-Oscars? Other than the Governor's Ball?

Can't wait for Sunday. I know I will bitch and moan and yell "woz robbed!!11", I will hate the montages and the jokes but it will be lots of fun and I'll watch every minute. I think that Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress are the most interesting categories this year. Supporting.....could be anyone really. Blanchett because of the double nom and a great performance, Dee could get a lifetime achievement award here, Swinton could win if they want to award "Michael Clayton", Ryan could win after those masses of critics awards she won and Ronan is the standout in a film that wasn't really that much loved this award season but that still might win something here. Personally, I'd love to see Ryan or Ronan win. I loved their performances and I think they both deserve to win. Best Actress - I guess it's between, well, all of them except for Linney (God, wouldn't that be crazy if she won?). Christie is the favourite because of her nearly-sweep pre-Oscar. Cotillard won the Globe and the BAFTA which might have given her a last-minute push in votes. Blanchett - double nominee in a role for which she should have won nine years ago. Page is the star of a super popular Best Picture nominee. Linney - I really don't know what to think. If the Academy loves her so much that they give her the nom despite her being ignored almost everywhere else, then why wouldn't they vote for her as the winner? Hmm. Personal fave: Cotillard. For the Actors, I'll still say Day-Lewis and Bardem . Ballots are in now so it's all done anyway. Looking forward to Sunday!!!
