They also took back Viola Davis's supporting actress nomination. I guess because they realized that they had 7 people instead of 6 listed. They also have Elegy being an original screenplay that was written by Phillip Roth, even though it's adapted, and he's not the one that adapted it.
Gran Torino and a few other movies that might be baity like Defiance were left off too, so I think it's just because the members haven't had time to see everything.

I haven't even heard of half the movies on that list.

NBR: Changeling plus the Gran Torino wins - why do awards organisations love Clint so much? Even Meryl makes films she isn't nominated/awarded for. I haven't seen Rachel Getting Married yet, but since I like Anne Hathaway I'm glad she seems to have gotten a very good role.

I don't know. I think it's because she makes it look so easy, and he also recently announced his retirement from acting. This group loves Eastwood, so it's not really a surprise. I was worried about the bad reviews that Gran Torino had been getting lately from some Oscar pundits who had seen it, but with this award, it's like I felt before he's winning Best Actor because he's Clint, his retirement, and because I can even see Sean Penn, who I would have picked to win in any other year, campaigning for Eastwood.
Streep really needs to have a Helen Mirren like sweep again if she wants to win her third Oscar because she's not going to do it with Doubt even if there's no real frontrunner now. Maybe next year she'll have a better chance with Julia and Julia. They love biopics, and she won't have Cherry Jones' performance hurting her chances for people who have seen Doubt on stage since everyone that I've read whose seen both prefers Jones.
I think that for Best Picture that the following are locks are starting to become locks in order from what I feel has the strongest chance to weakest chance, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, and The Dark Knight. Basically I think the first three are locks, and TDK is closing in on becoming a lock especially with getting on the Best 10 list with this awards group who is notorious for snubbing big budget features over smaller fare. I thought Revolutionary Road would get that last spot, but it, Doubt, and The Reader were snubbed today. I guess that leaves Frost/Nixon which sort of makes sense in a way because Opie definitely would be the lone director out in that situation since he's only been nominated once at the Oscars even missing when he won the DGA.

I've already decided to ignore the NBR wins and noms, two Clint films in the top 10 and with him winning best actor - make it stoooop!!!! I really really hope that this doesn't jumpstart a Clint sweep throughout the award season. Or I'll be out of this season even before the Globes.

I concur.
Organizations - and especially the Oscars, whose biggest voting bloc is actors - love to award actors-turned-directors.
For god's sake, Ron Howard, Mel Gibson and Kevin Costner all took home Oscars before Scorcese did.

Not only do I think he'll probably win Best Actor, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him singing one of the Best Original Songs on Oscar night either. I'm not sure whether to or because it could be on par with Snow White and Rob Lowe singing together at the Oscars.

I know I've been feeling like this in the past two years as well but this year, more than ever, I think that the pre-Oscar race will be all over the place. Usually only some categories are open up until the end but I think that the race will be wide open this year. Yes, there haven't been any major awards handed out yet but even looking at the Top Ten Lists of several critics suggests that nobody knows anything (Ebert couldn't even be bothered to do ten, he has a list of 20!). And I'm not sure the Golden Globe noms on Thursday will be any help. By the way, I may have missed this, but has there be an announcement about who will present the Oscars? It's December and the show will be in two months, so they must have someone already, right?

I guess they haven't announced anyone yet because reading around the net there seems to be some speculation that they were looking at Ricky Gervais for the hosting gig. I think hosting is a pretty thankless job and it'd probably cut down on some time if you cut out the host and just had presenters - like the golden globes.
