I'd actually be in favour of not having a host since they spend so much time anyway on showing those montages (which these days seem to be the most important part of the show for the producers). They don't need a host for that. I did like Steve Martin though and would love to see him back as a host. But you're right, canuckcutie, it IS a thankless job.

I don't think these really mean much, but since I think the consensus will probably be all over the place this year except for maybe Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor, here's the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics honorees.

I'm just saying it here now, knowing nothing about the movie itself, Will Smith will be an Academy Award nominee this year for Seven Pounds.

BFCA noms. Brangelina Complete shut-out of Revolutionary Road. Kate still got in for The Reader (in Supporting). I can't believe I'm seeing Kate Beckinsale among the Best Actress nominees. I know she got good reviews and there was some minor buzz but I guess I didn't expect her to actually get in (over Winslet). I think I hate this award season already

Please, oh please, don't let the Brangelina win anything. The smug would be unbearable!

Please, oh please, don't let the Brangelina win anything. The smug would be unbearable! No, I could see them getting nominated together at the Globes too because the Globes are such fame whores, but the Best Actor category is too crowded for Pitt to make it in this year especially since the ladies seem to be getting most of the nominations or awards so far. Also, while I thought that this year was sparse in the Best Actress category with seeming like there was realistically only six or seven candidates that the pool was going to be drawn from, there seem to be a few more possible candidates now that I don't think a Jolie will get in if she couldn't get in for A Mighty Heart and last year was even weaker for leading women's roles. I just feel bad for Kristin Scott Thomas who I think got snubbed here just to make room for Brangelina to get in. I really think she could have used it the most since her movie is so small, and she hasn't really picked up any big critics awards. It's still early, but I thought that she would win the most.

Yeah, I don't expect any Brangelina wins but they'll both definitely be nominated for the Globes.
Speaking of the Globes, I can't wait for the announcements on Thursday. I know that they're not to be taken too seriously but they may help in terms of cutting down on the numbers of serious contenders. Though, maybe not, since the Globe has comedy and drama categories. I'm predicting at least two Streep noms. ;-)

Personally I'm kind of shocked, not unhappily though, that In Bruges scored three nominations. I thought most people had forgotten about it already.

The snubs for Milk are awful especially in Best Supporting Actor. There were many more worthy people to nominate in that category who really could have used the boost instead of wasting it on Tom Cruise like James Franco, James Brolin, Emile Hirsch, Eddie Marsan, Michael Shannon, Dev Patel, and Michael Sheen just to name a few people off the top of my head. Technically the latter two are leading roles masquerading as supporting because of the leading category being so full, but as much as I hate category fraud, those two would have been more welcome than hearing Cruise's name. He was funny for a short while, but later on it grew tiresome. By the end, I wouldn't even say he was the funniest part of the movie. It would almost be worth it to see the actors strike and not show up to this award show, so that they have to read the winners off a list again that way they don't get their precious Brangelina to show up or any of their other pets.
