I'd like it if AMPAS would modify their rules allowing double noms in the same category but then you'll get issues like vote splitting and Hollywood politics and so on. It's just a little unfair that it takes away from a genuine supporting performance like Amy Adams or Penelope Cruz, for example.

It's totally unfair to supporting players when leads are nominated in their category.
A few years back Nicole Kidman had the Others and Moulin Rouge in the same year. People wanted her to campaign for just one so she didn't cancel herself out but she wouldn't do it and got a nomination for Moulin Rouge.
In the early days of the Oscars they allowed mulitple noms in one year: Garbo in 30 for Anna Christie and Romance, Ronald Colman for Bulldog Drummond and Condemned.
They should put both performances on the ballot, total the votes you get for both and if that puts the person in the top five the one they got the most votes for is the one hey get the nominations for.
It's just not right to call lead roles supporting. The Academy needs to fix the rules.

I really want Kate Winslet and Richard Jenkins to be nominated and WIN as lead actors.

Kate Winslet shut out in the supporting category. Good it wasn't supporting. Glad Richard Jenkins was nominated.

For The Reader, not Revolutionary Road, it should be noted. (Its only major nom was a supporting actor for Michael Shannon - who?). But screw you, category fraud!
Yay for RDJ in Supporting Actor for Tropic Thunder.
Biggest surprise was Melissa Leo - mainly because I read a lot of criticism about how she *should* be nominated but wouldn't.
This felt like a very...genuine line-up of noms.
Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, Viola Davis, Penelope Cruz, Taraji P Henson, Marisa Tomei (likely Penelope with Viola as a longshot)
supporting actor: Robert Downey Junior, Josh Brolin, Heath, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Michael Shannon (Heath)
Actress: Anne Hathaway, Melissa Leo, Meryl, Angie and Kate Winslet (Kate)
Actor: Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke, Brad, Frank Langella, Richard Jenkins (Sean or Mickey)
picture: frost/nixon, benjamin button, slumdog, milk, the reader. (BB or slumdog)

Major but unsurprising snub for Rev Road. Yay for Kate! Her chances are looking really good I'd say. Even though The Reader hasn't really been embraced this award season AMPAS seem to like it, the film got some major noms. They also really seem to like Amy Adams. See her winning over Cruz.
No Clint, no Dark Knight. And perfect match between Director and Film wasn't something I expected this year I have to say.

Huh, the directing and picture noms lined up exactly this year - that hasn't happened in a few years.
I think Penelope will win because Viola and Amy will split the Doubt noms (and as weird and awful as this sounds, Viola and Taraji splitting the "black vote"). Maybe Tomei in a "she earned this for real this time!" upset.
Thank god for no Best Picture nominations for TDK or Wall-E. I would've cut a bitch.

The Dark Knight was robbed! Looks like The Reader took its place instead. I'm happy for the Brangelina nom. Kinda funny how every movie that Angelina did this year got nominated for something.
My early picks:
Picture & Director: Slumdog Millionaire Actor: Mickey Rourke Actress: Kate Winslet (finally!) S. Actor: Heath Ledger S. Actress: Any of them could take it but I'm leaning towards Henson as that'll be the way to honour Benjamin Button in a major category since it may lose to Slumdog in all the other major categories.

Huh, the directing and picture noms lined up exactly this year - that hasn't happened in a few years. I think Penelope will win because Viola and Amy will split the Doubt noms. The only reason I'd like to see Pen win is to witness Bardem's face when he opens that envelope I'm not a fan of hers and could live without hearing "Academy Award Winner Penelope Cruz" . Especially if the Academy goes ahead and decides to make Kate Winslet the youngest person ever with six Oscar nominations.....and no win (seriously, I don't think I can stomach the sight of either Jolie, Streep or Hathaway winning that night ) The Dark Knight got a couple of other noms too in the sound and visual effects categories. I didn't really expect the Best Picture nom but thought that at least Nolan would get in. Current picks: Film: Ben Button Director: Danny Boyle Actress: no comment Actor: Rourke Supp.Actress: Adams Supp. Actor: Heath
