Mugsy, The Hurt Locker out on DVD. Easily rentable.
This year's ceremony is probably going to be interminable, between introducing 10 BP nominees and James Cameron's self-satisfied acceptance speeches. (I haven't seen Avatar, but I'm kinda rooting against it just because I don't want to see a repeat of 1998.)

Is Avatar really that good? I thought it was. It's a minority opinion on this board but I loved it and all my friends who have seen it have similar opinions. It's corny to say but to me, Avatar brings the "magic of movies" that Up in the Air or District 9, both good movies, didn't for me.

I saw it and it was terrific. It's not playing anywhere near you because it's on DVD. You can rent it.
Why do comparisons need to be drawn against this movie with other war movies? You can't compare The Deer Hunter to Apocalypse Now—they're both completely different films set against the backdrop of war.

I liked Avatar. It's visually spectacular. I was just expecting the worst, so it surprised me.
I finally saw Inglorious Basterds, and I have to say. I think it trumped An Education as my favorite film of the year.
I liked Blind Side, but no way do I think it should be in the same category as the other films. I liked District 9, but personally, I would have put Star Trek in there....

No, other than the visual effects, Avatar is not very good at all if you ask me. It's similar to Titanic in that the dialogue and story are pretty much an afterthought. Apparently, I'm supposed to ignore that and just focus on the grand scale, mega-budget 3-D action adventure extravaganza part. Not easy for me to do. If you like grand scale mega-3D action adventure type movies, it's really good. However, based on my username, you can probably guess that L.A. Confidential is one of my favorite movies, so I'm all about the snappy dialogue, twisting plots, and not really into big budget special effects extravaganzas at all. I was not pleased when the afore mentioned Titanic ran all over L.A. in 1998, so, yeah, I'm a little jaded, bitter, and biased. Editing and directing often go hand-in-hand as well, since the two people usually work together pretty closely. I can see the cancelling out thing happening because of divided votes. I doubt Mirren will get that many votes since she's just come off a win for an even better performance a few years ago. Meryl is going to have to give the performance of a lifetime to get a 3rd Oscar, and that wasn't it. The two younger actresses still have years to prove themselves, and, if they have staying power, they will get nominated again in the future (i.e. a "make-up" or "you've paid your dues" Oscar). Since a lot of the voters are veteran actors, I think they often have that mentality about the younger nominees. The actor category has a similar thing going on. Clooney's won recently. Freeman's won in the recent past, plus, Invictus isn't really riding on a wave of Oscar glory. It's Renner's first nomination. Jeff Bridges is going to appeal to veteran actors and he's never won anything.

I want Jeremy Renner to win so badly now. After seeing his reaction to the nomination[/color], he's just too cute and genuine for words.

I'm in the minority on this board that loved Avatar, and I'd be fine with it winning Best Picture. I'd be fine with any of them really because I've seen and liked them all. Which is good for my loved ones because I become an unbearable bitch when I movie I don't like wins.

I can honestly say I am excited to watch the Oscars this year. It is going to be a good show. I also want Jeremy Renner to be my boyfriend.

I am so happy to see 2 frigging science fiction movies nominated! I know it's only because there are now 10 nominees instead of 5, but I'll take it. Yay genre! I loved both Avatar and District 9 (and Moon, which sadly didn't get any noms: Sam Rockwell was ROBBED) but I don't mind seeing other movies win it. I don't feel very invested in any of the nominations, except that I wouldn't mind if Jeff Bridges won. Sam Rockwell, Viggo Mortensen for The Road, and District 9 guy. And Julianne Moore. and Zoe Saldana. Ferngully with 3d glasses and she sold that crap.
