"88 Minutes" is a breathtakingly, staggeringly bad movie. Pacino's character notes consist of just one word ("asshole") -- yet he's apparently sexually irresistible to every pretty young thing he encounters -- and his hair/make-up look like they were applied by a Granville Mall shoeshine -- yes, shockingly, it's set in Vangroover-as-Seattle. The supporting cast is depicted so clunkily that they all should have Snidely Whiplash mustaches to twirl, even the women, and Pacino is even reduced to confronting random people on UBC campus with "are YOU the killer? How about YOU?" He's also way-handsy with every woman in the cast. Each moment begs the question: "Did every production choice need to be made under the influence of cocaine stepped on with ketamine?"

Hey, my review of Drive Angry is in What Did You Rent Last Night. I don't think it's the worst thing I've ever seen (that honor goes to Blood Freak, or maybe Manos: The Hands of Fate), but it is indeed a delightfully Bad Movie.

Sorry for not responding sooner, and I'm so glad it was craptacularly Cagerrific for you! I hafta ask, though... What value is added, hilarity-wise, by watching in Spanish?

Sorry for not responding sooner, and I'm so glad it was craptacularly Cagerrific for you! I hafta ask, though... What value is added, hilarity-wise, by watching in Spanish? Just the silliness of watching someone's lips when a completely different language is coming out. (We like martial arts films dubbed in English for the same reason.) One of our weirdest movie-watching experiences was when we were visiting family in Norway. Attack of the Clones was playing in Stavanger, and my young nephew and niece wanted to see it, so we all trooped off to the theater (much to my dismay, because I loathe all things Star Wars, but what you gonna do?). It was presented in English and subtitled in Norwegian, which was fine -- except for the cantina scenes with aliens, which, of course, featured non–English-speaking aliens ... subtitled in Norwegian. We laughed our asses off because, really, as awful as George Lucas' writing is, it didn't really make much difference whether we knew what was going on in those scenes or not.

Hah! Now you've got me thinking that I should download some subtitle files for Cage movies, translate them into Spanish, then Swedish, then back to English and rewatch the movies. Not quite as fun as having them dubbed, but still.

Speaking of dubbing... I posted this on the YouTube thread, but there's a The Room/Inception mashup trailer that actually made me appreciate Leonardo DiCaprio a lot. His voice coming out of Tommy Wiseau's mouth makes Wiseau actually look like a real actor. Kind of.

Being the good, generous auntie that I am, I reluctantly agreed to watch Jack and Jill with my nephew. I mentally checked out, oh, five minutes in. Somehow Adam Sandler outdid himself with this fuckery. My nephew, on the other hand, declared it the Best! Movie! EVER!
He's young; he'll learn. And I deserve some sort of medal.

I have a friend who believes that Jack and Jill is a modern classic. She was also impressed by the lack of cursing. (I have very strange friends.)

I've commented before that for every single movie made, someone out there in the world thinks it's the Best. Movie. Ever. Scary, isn't it?
