Okay, so...last night I decided to watch a couple of Greecie favorites that I've long wanted to enjoy: Don't Look Now and The Believers.
Yikes. DLN is suspenseful and gloomy as all hell, even if that ending is bizarre. It's The Believers that really put my hair on end, though. A nicely directed voodoo themed film which managed to make the topic actually scary--puts its cheesy copycat The Serpent and the Rainbow to shame. Plus, young Martin Sheen (hot.)

In honour of Halloween I watched a bunch of horror movies this weekend. Unintentionally most of them had a theme of killer children or (spoiler) killer dwarfs . I finally watched Don't Look Now which was haunting and sad and very well done. Also watched The Brood which suffered from some bad Canadian acting but got super creepy by the end. Followed that up with Who Can Kill A Child, a Spanish film which is kind of like a cross between Village of the Damned and Children of the Corn. It was pretty good too. I finished with Inside (A L’Intérieur) a French movie about a very pregnant woman who goes through the most horrible home invasion possible. Holy crap was that bloody. It went a little off the rails at the end but it did a good job of ratcheting up the tension. I think the moral of all these films is do not have children/get pregnant ever.
Has anyone seen Martyrs? I am debating watching that but I don't know. I am kind of curious about it but I have heard it is very hard to watch. I love horror but I am not really a fan of extreme horror. Inside was probably close to my limit in terms of violence and gore.

I've not yet seen Don't Look Now, but I know that Stephen King touts it as one of the scariest ever. I've long said that The Believers is my Scariest Movie Ever -- those "I can't trust anyone" plots really get to me, and Martin Sheen sells the hell out of it. I actually didn't mind The Serpent and the Rainbow that much, but it just didn't pack the fear of The Believers.

Stephen King's taste in music chills me to the bone.
What do you call it when you don't jump out of your seat and aren't frightened intellectually by the material but the film is so well-made that you find your spine is *actually* tingling? Because the original, HK version of "The Eye" did that last night. Stupid, toe-floating ghosts.

Woah, bstewart and I are on the same horror wavelength this week. The Eye is next up on my 'to watch' list.

Since I found a caption-inserting program which actually works quickly and perfectly, my foreign-movie downloads have escalated alarmingly, Smilla. I watched "The Eye" and "Audition" over the weekend and have the "Ringu" Cycle cued up for tonight. I'm having a lot of fun taking screen caps of various random bits of wisdom culled from Asian Extreme cinema. This is one of my faves.

Oh God, Audition. I had blacked that out of my memory completely. Brilliant movie, best watched with hands covering eyes. bstewart can I ask what caption-inserting program you use? I always have trouble with subtitles on the foreign movies I uh, acquire.

I've seen "Audition" three times and every time forget that I shouldn't eat or drink anything beforehand. Brutal. bronze, I use AVIAddXSubs. It takes about two tries to figure out how easy it is to use, and SO much faster and easier than anything else I've used. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. And thanx for the tips on "The Woman" and "Martyrs", both of which are in the viewing hopper. Did you hear that Burt Reynolds is guest-voicing on the season premiere of "Archer" in January? Yuuup.

Thanks, I will give that program a try. I have only seen a couple of the films so far but I would say that the French new wave of horror gives the Asian extreme a run for its money.
o/t Burt Reynolds on Archer is perfect.

Ugh...Audition that was a memorable movie. Scared me half to death when the bag just starts moving....
