After watching Babs Hershey, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne earn a paycheque for "Insidious", I think it's safe to say that in the case of the filmmaking team of Wan and Whannell, financial success does not artistic success make. What a waste. Their acting talent, my time.

We rented Lake Mungo last night based on the all the good reviews, and boy, were we disappointed. I love a good ghost story, but this one fell flat. The momentum was ruined halfway through when the brother admitted to faking the first series of photos. After that, it was kind of hard to take anything seriously. And I really didn't get the point of the sex tape - it seemed like they were introducing some kind of murder mystery, but then it went nowhere. Did not like it at all.

I was unexpectedly moved by 28 Days Later. Still haven't seen the sequel, though. Kinda don't want the first filmed ruined for me.
I still think the most frightening movie I've seen in the last five years is 30 Days of Night. Vampires. Snow. Horrifying.

For this Halloween Week, I thought I'd post some of my personal scariest that I still haven't seen mentioned in this thread. The Uninvited: Maybe not the greatest acting on the planet, but it had some nice tension, and the twist is good. (Chilling final scene.) Silent Hill: Yes, I realize it was based on a video game, but it still managed to scare the crap out of me. Has a Jacob's Ladder quality to it. Grace: Not recommended for pregnant women, women planning to be pregnant, or people with pregnant friends or relatives (especially those who've chosen to go the midwifery route.) An American Haunting: That thoroughly underrated Sissy Spacek/Donald Sutherland film from '05 that has some uber-creepy moments in it. Cold, really, with a disturbing message. May: Unsettling. I suggest reading Ebert's review before committing to it.

May is a great movie. Unsettling is the perfect word for it. I just watched The Woman which is by the same director as May and also stars Angela Bettis. It is not as good as May but still interesting. I wouldn't say it is exactly scary but it is disturbing. It is about a family man who kidnaps a feral woman he sees in the woods and chains her in his cellar with the purpose of civilizing her. And that is not the worse thing he does in the movie. It is actually not that violent and the few moments of gore look really fake. Still the whole concept is creepy as hell. When the movie was shown at Sundance apparently one of the audience members freaked out after and was yelling at the director asking how he could make a movie like this. I would say it is a feminist horror movie but that didn't make me feel much better when there is a scene where a woman is spoiler literally fed to vicious dogs. An odd little horror movie and definitely not for everyone but worth checking out. Trailer is here.

For me, I still prefer the horror movies where a lot is left to the imagination. I've said it before but the London Underground scene in An American Werewolf in London is terrifying. The fact that it's then followed up with the "Mummy, a naked American man stole my balloon!" scene is just brilliant.
