Lake Mungo. A week later and I'm still trying to shake it off. I don't think I've seen anything scarier since The Exorcist. That was more flat-out frightening. This is a creepy-unsettling ghost story that lingers. I watched the trailer a couple of nights ago and it looked really creepy. Can't wait to see it.

Don't expect much more than chills and a twisty plot which doesn't insult your intelligence, you guys. I know that sounds like faint praise but, when it comes to ghost stories, it's head and shoulders above the rest.

Unless it's "campy" (Cheerleader Camp) or funny/scary (An American Werewolf in London) there are very few horror movies that I love. But something that's twisty, spooky, and scary? Great fun.

Lake Mungo was uber creepy, but I didn't love the ending overly much. Still, it gets points for strong psychological horror and for the hot dad. Reminded me of Victor Garber.

Yeah, I really liked the totally unexpected twists and backflips but that closing shot? Meh. Trite. The last ten seconds doesn't kill the previous film for me, though. And, YES!, David Pledger does have a Victor Garber look. I'm ubersmitten.

After the discussion in the Worst Movie thread concerning "Serbian Film", I almost hesitate to bring up "Aftermath", a 30 minute exercise in wildly offensive ideas presented in a ridiculously controlled, artistic way. I first saw the 1994 short a year ago and dismissed it as sensational trash. But I recently acquired a DVD containing this movie and two others which make up a trilogy meditation on death that's quite affecting.
The director, Nacho Cerdà , says he wanted to make a movie which not only disturbed but, in his words, "will disturb you for the rest of your life". I think he may succeed. His recent movie, "The Abandoned", is a very effective haunted house dealio that mostly works due to the director's perfect pairing with his cinematographer.
Speaking of which, the cinematographer who captured in such loving detail "Aftermath"'s brutal >>corpse defiling, both medical and sexual<< also filmed 44 episodes of "Glee". Hunh.

I thought Mirrors was okay, but I'm one of those people who'll see The Kief in anything. Maybe I didn't much like it because I'll never forgive director Alexandre Aka for the ending to "High Tension". Never.

You're more generous than I am, bstewart - I don't forgive him for ANY of High Tension. (I agree, though, that the ending was groan-out-loud awful.)

Mirrors was not scary. I liked the set design, though. I didn't even realize that there was a Mirrors 2.
