Okay, I'm no DVD connoisseur, but B&N had the 16DVD set of the complete Monty Python's Flying Circus series today for $50. Somebody talk me down...

Which BluRay player did you get, bstewart? I remember you had an upconverting DVD player for quite awhile. I inherited a Phillips upconverting player/recorder this past summer from a guy moving out of my buliding as I was moving in. I think I might try to record some of my VHS stuff to DVD. I actually went for a skinny PlayStation3. It plays BluRay, upconverts regular DVDs AND it streams wirelessly from my home network all the AVIs, MP4s, MP3s and JPGs from the shared directories on my computers. It didn't work very well with Vista but it works AWESOMELY with Win7. I've bought only one actual PS3 game, so it seems like a bit of overkill, but the convenience of never having to cut a downloaded TV show or movie to a DVD, instead keeping them all on a home media server, is pretty cool. Also, the visualizer effects for my television while it plays MP3s are... trippy. The only downside I've discovered is that it can't be hacked to play all-region DVDs, so all those The Prisoner DVDs I've acquired must be played on an old-school player.

Best. Sale. Ever. Barnes and Noble is selling ALL Criterion Collection DVDs (including Massive Boxsets - like the entire Kurosawa Ouevre, which granted, is Extra-less - *and* BluRays *and* forthcoming titles) for 50% off. If you're a Barnes and Noble member, you get a bonus 10% off. The sale ends August 1st.
Oh, and Black Narcissis, The Red Shoes and Black Orpheus - three of the most beautifully shot films ever made, with the first being the most eye-popping example of classic Three-Strip Technicolor I have ever seen on the Big Screen - are all being re-released in upgraded/Blu-Ray editions before then. I really, really need a cheap HDTV/Blu-Ray upgrade like now. Especially since they are going to release a feature-packed The Thin Red Line disc in the fall. It is the theatrical cut, as far as I know, without any of the famed extra footage, but tons of commentaries, interviews with the actors, etc. I generally dislike war films but I hold this one up as a true masterpiece.
Yeah, my there's a B&N directly across from my office and the bank on the corner. And today was payday. I had to restrain myself somewhat.

So, I think the time has come to admit that, despite Blu (oh, hey, guess who finally got an awesome Sony HDTV/Blu-Ray* set-up), a disc-based format is only going to be for collectors in the future and really a niche-market. Which sucks, because I like to OWN things. But several studios have all but abandoned their classic libraries (opting for a burn-DVD-on-demand format) and even the leader of the game, Criterion, has signed a deal with Hulu Plus, after offering their films via Netflix Instant. Meanwhile, for those who still buy discs, Warner is offering the greatest deal ever -- trade in absolutely *any* DVD for a WB Blu-Ray (your choice of 100 totally decent titles) for $5 each. Got a crappy movie as a Christmas gift? Want to upgrade a certain movie? Go ahead! * - it should be noted that I made my decision regarding which model of Blu-Ray player to go with based on built-in Netflix Instant capability, despite the fact that WiFi isn't set up at my place yet. I have to say, besides the obvious picture quality, I loooooooove the pop-up menu capability of Blu-Ray. So, I am seriously considering buying the SuperDeluxe Limited Numbered 70th Aniversary Editions of both GWTW & Wizard of Oz, despite the fact that I have owned these films in every format imaginable and that they're well over $70 a piece. Eh, maybe I'll just get the former, since I love it so much more than Oz.

Yup. I've decided to forego Blu-Ray and just keep my upconverting player until it breaks.
I've noticed that while FYE will still buy back DVDs (last I checked), they're paying a lot less for them for these days. Like I used to be paid about half of the used price they'll sell it for- $5 on a DVD they'll sell for $10. Now they'll only pay a buck or two.
Have they figured out how to put commentary tracks in a streaming format yet?

Well, this thread is light years beyond me, but if Empire of the Sun ever comes out on Blu-Ray, please send me a private message regarding same. I so wish it had been shot now.
We have a Sony Blu Ray player and sound system (we are not technophiles) and we really like it, despite my aversion to Sony in general.

So, remember a page ago when I bitched about Warners decision to make the only copy of the theatrical edition on the Watchmen: UCE a digital copy?! Yeah, fuck them even more now. With the release of Sucker Punch in a week, it reminded me to track down the UCE of Watchmen. Unfortunately, it is technically out-of-print, but I managed to find a copy at B&N for less than $21! (which, yay, because the DVD starts at Amazon used at $45 & the Blu at $88).
So, apparently, WB Video has decided to put expiration dates on their digital copies and the Watchmen offer expired 11/3/10. The digital copy in the Oz 70th UCE? Expired as well. Ditto for the GWTW set that's coming. Here's the thing, Warner, one of the things that I am paying for by shelling out the extra money for the box set IS that digital copy. Which should be mine if I am paying for it. Bite me.
I still am in the process of discovering the improvements of Blu but, seriously, a quality transfer is like my eyeballs are being made love to. I always feel bad about re-buying films I already own (is this what olds feel like with vinyl/cassette/CD/Itunes?) but if/when B&N has the half-off Criterion sale, I may have to upgrade all the Blu-available titles.
The funny thing is that because I live in an apartment building and have extremely noise-sensitive neighbors downstairs, I don't have any external speakers to take full advantage of the OMG Lossless Crazy Good Surround Sound. Maybe once I have a sugar daddy and he lets me put in a proper screening room in our house...
