There's a definitive "My So-Called Life" DVD coming out tomorrow! I had no idea even though I noticed that the show's thread was towards the top of th page on TWoP last week.

Awesome, I'm so there. I really loved this show alot. I might buy this one and the DVD set of Freaks and Geeks together tomorrow. It'd be a day of teenage angst for me!

Well, this is a bit of a dilemma. I'd just assumed that the Twin Peaks Definitive Gold Box Edition would be a mere repackaging of the long-unavailable Season One discs, plus the recently-released Season Two discs and the Pilot -- and thus enable me to sell the originals -- but, as it turns out, it's a whole different presentation. Man, that means TP will be taking up almost as much shelf space as Buffy.
And thanks ever so much for the freakin' post cards, CBS Home Video. I'm sure all Twin Peaks freaks were clamoring for those. I won't even comment on the fact that you stick only a handful of the "series of 61" in the set, ya jerks.
And and? Memo to Hollywood: Stop WRECKING your DVD releases by putting Saturday Night Live sketches on them. They're not funny now and they were not funny then. Yes, even with Phil Hartman the Twin Peaks sketch was lamer than lame.
Still. Me == violently happy. The "making of" docs are good, the transfers look crisp and clean and colourful.
Also, my favouritest movie of all time, O Lucky Man! was released today, just a couple of months after Criterion released If... and... well, let's just say that Warners' luxe, Special Edition release in no way compares to Criterion's. Not that I thought it would, of course, but c'mon.

My favourite action movie of all time, Face/Off, came out in a super duper special edition on HD-DVD today. So happy!

Don't listen to him! Some of us were, like, 11 when TP came out and therefore totally welcome this sort of thing to experience the whole TP as pop culture icon thing. Or something.
But I'm bitter about other things considering I (a) sold the old DVDs to put money in the bank to prevent my rent check from bouncing and my roomie killing me and (b) did this with the assumption I would be buying the new set for said roommate's birthday, only to have her (c) be not excited at all since she's watched the whole series 5+ times on the crappy EP tapes. So I still haven't gotten it. So instead she's getting the complete X-Files, which comes out in a week.
Guess it's 90s cult TV show time.
Oh, Criterion's just acquired The Ice Storm and is prepping it.

Don't listen to him! Some of us were, like, 11 when TP came out and therefore totally welcome this sort of thing to experience the whole TP as pop culture icon thing. Or something. Fine! Fine!!! Watch Kevin Nealon blow every one of his lines as Sheriff Truman! Melt over the unbridled sexiness of Victoria Jackson (!) as Audrey Horne! See Conan O'Brien do absolutely nothing while on stage! Honestly, though? When you do get the set -- and I won't be eating for the next week since laying out over a hundred bucks (Canadian!) for it and O Lucky Man! was kinda unplanned-for (on the other hand, unprincipled spending is very slimming) -- I think you'll enjoy the documentaries for the reasons you mention and you'll really enjoy A Slice of Lynch in which the creator sits down in a bar, smoking, and chats with "Madgeken" and "Kale" and "JW" (a former assistant for whom I can't quite figure out his presence, but he's kinda hottish), explaining his nicknames for them and the whole TP experience. Disc Ten is a goldmine for fans.

Wait, so why do we need to keep the old DVD sets, bstewart? How is the presentation different?

Well, I tend to get a bit obsessive about extras, and the Season One set had a gorgeous presentation, with commentaries, a hard-at-first-to-decipher character matrix and links to deleted scenes in the script on a timeline throughout each episode. If they're there in this set, I can't find them. Will it hamper your enjoyment of the series? No, because the shows themselves are well-transferred with good colour timing and whatnot.
Also, I haven't tested this theory, but I have a feeling that the street price offered by used-DVD stores for previous releases dropped by about 50% when this set was released. I mean, I'd argue that my (crappy Asian) pilot DVD was virtually worthless before this set, now I'd say it's literally worthless.

This is a heads up for anyone who might be interested in some stunning canadian made stop-motion animation. It's a short film called Madame Tutli Putli and it looks amazing. the link is to the National Film Board page for the film. It has pictures, a trailer, some short clips about the making of the film and a link for the DVD which has just come out. Since this doesn't have the advertising push of something like Transformers most people won't ever hear about it but it's some of the most striking stop motion I've ever seen. Awesome Canadian short film
